Musical theatre is an international form, not just an American one. It can take root anywhere. Few people would realise that such hit standards as "The Glow Worm", "Brazil", "Mack the Knife", "I Will Wait for You" and "El Condor Pasa" came from foreign language musicals. ""His research is monumental... This is an important book on a previously undocumented area of musical theatre."" -- Peter Pinne, Stage Whispers ""There's never been a better book for the armchair-traveler-theatergoer."" -- Peter Filichia

The stage musical constitutes a major industry not only in the US and the UK, but in many regions of the world. Over the last four decades many countries have developed their own musical theatre industries, not only by importing hit shows from Broadway and London but also by establishing or reviving local traditions of musical theatre. In response to the rapid growth of musical theatre as a global phenomenon, The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical presents new scholarly approaches to issues arising from these new international markets. The volume examines the stage musical from theoretical and empirical perspectives including concepts of globalization and consumer culture, performance and musicological analysis, historical and cultural studies, media studies, notions of interculturalism and hybridity, gender studies, and international politics. The thirty-three essays investigate major aspects of the global musical, such as the dominance of Western colonialism in its early production and dissemination, racism and sexism--both in representation and in the industry itself--as well as current conflicts between global and local interests in postmodern cultures. Featuring contributors from seventeen countries, the essays offer informed insider perspectives that reflect the diversity of the subject and offer in-depth examinations of specific cultural and economic systems. Together, they conduct penetrating comparative analysis of musical theatre in different contexts as well as a survey of the transcultural spread of musicals.

This is the first book documenting the history of the Singapore musical. It aims not only to portray what the Singapore theatre scene was like in the past, but also how the stories and language used can capture its culture, art and social life. The first musicals appeared in 1988 and for the next couple of decades there has been a flourishing of new musicals. However, this was stalled for three years during the COVID-19 pandemic with the closure of theatres. Recovery is starting again and there is a renaissance in creativity with new musicals being written and staged. This book covers original Singapore stage musicals, pantomimes, operas, movies and college musicals. It also touches on Chinese language musicals. Important playwrights, lyricists, composers, producers and directors are highlighted in the book. It ends by proposing several ways to stimulate further creation of new musicals which will have an impact on the evolution of Singapore's musical theatre.Initially influenced by Broadway and West End musicals, Singapore has evolved into its own unique style of presentation. Documentation of this development is important. The final chapter recommends how musicals can be developed further, and this can have an significant impact on the creation of future Singapore musicals. The Foreword is written by Professor Tommy Koh, the Founder President of the National Arts Council of Singapore.

Running Away With the Circus (or - "Now is the Winter of Our Missing Tent"), an is full of both humour and intrigue, as you will see by its opening sentence: If some clairvoyant had told me that I'd be spending my nights in a shipping container in Taiwan, guarding seven tigers, six Chihuahuas, five bears, four sea lions, three geese, two horses and a "killer dog" named Ludwig, I'd have said "You're supposed to read the tea leaves, not smoke them." This book takes a look at what happens when people of radically different cultures try to work together. Acclaimed television producer (and composer of the musical Anne of Green Gables) Norman Campbell said, "Your lively prose astounds me... It is really great writing and observing... You are a brilliant writer! I mean it!"

In Beyond Broadway, author Stacy Wolf looks at thewidespread presence and persistence of musical theatre in U.S. culture, and examines it as a social practice - a live, visceral experience of creating, watching, and listening. Why does local musical theatre flourish in America? Why do so many Americans continue to passionately engage in acentury-old artistic practice that requires intense, person-to-person collaboration? And why do audiences still flock to musicals in their hometowns? Touring American elementary schools, a middle school performance festival, afterschool programs, high schools, summer camps, state park outdoortheatres, community theatres, and dinner theatres from California to Tennessee, Wolf illustrates musical theatre's abundance and longevity in the U.S. as a thriving social activity that touches millions of lives.
