This open access book will examine the implications of digitalization for the understanding of humanity, conceived as a community of intelligent agency. It addresses important topics across a range of social and behavioral theories and identifies a range of novel mechanisms and their social behavioral effects. Across the book, the author highlights the expansion of intelligent processing capability brought about by digitalization and the challenges this exposes for integrating artificial and human capabilities. It includes the altered effects of bounded rationality in problem solving and decision making; related changes in the perception of rationality, plus novel myopias and biases. It also seeks to address cognitive intersubjectivity, learning from performance and agentic self-generation; and the novel methods and patterns of reasoned thought which emerge in a digitalized world; and how these mechanisms will combine in making and remaking the world of human experience and understanding. This book examines the problematics and prospects for digitally augmented humanity. In doing so, it maps the terrain for a future science of augmented agency. It will have cross-disciplinary appeal to students and scholars of applied psychology, cognitive and behavioral science, organizational psychology and management, business, finance, and digital cultures and humanities.

Advances in hardware and networking have made possible a wide use of augmented reality (AR) technologies. However, simply putting those hardware and technologies together does not make a “good” system for end users to use. New design principles and evaluation methods specific to this emerging area are urgently needed to keep up with the advance in technologies. Human Factors in Augmented Reality Environments is the first book on human factors in AR, addressing issues related to design, development, evaluation and application of AR systems. Topics include surveys, case studies, evaluation methods and metrics, HCI theories and design principles, human factors and lessons learned and experience obtained from developing, deploying or evaluating AR systems. The contributors for this cutting-edge volume are well-established researchers from diverse disciplines including psychologists, artists, engineers and scientists. Human Factors in Augmented Reality Environments is designed for a professional audience composed of practitioners and researchers working in the field of AR and human-computer interaction. Advanced-level students in computer science and engineering will also find this book useful as a secondary text or reference.

Augmented Humans have been used, as slaves and as 'cannon fodder', in the Darinx Empire's war, against the Verm Empire. The Augmented Human Rebellion began some 30 years ago, when some Augmented Human soldiers were forced to desert the Darinx Army, or to die a useless death. That company of Darinx Army soldiers was able to capture some Verm Navy vessels, and then they used those warships to escape the wrath of the Darinx Emperor. As they 'ran for their lives', they became stronger in size and in purpose. This wasn't the first rebellion by the 'augmented humans', but it was the first one, with a chance for success. That small group of soldiers grew into a small navy, by capturing Verm warships. And they became even larger, as they sold their services as mercenaries, in the Frontier Sector of space. The Darinx Empire was forced to treat 'augmented humans' better, out of fear that there would be a wholesale desertion, by the Darinx 'augmented humans'. Now, 30 years later, the conditions for 'augmented humans' have improved, but there is still prejudice and grudging acceptance. The other factor that has caused the improved conditions, for 'augmented humans', is the fact that they are far superior, to any other Darinx fighters, in strength and in mental capabilities. The 'augmented human' soldiers/sailors have changed the trajectory of the war, in the favor of the Darinx Empire. And, the Augmented Human Rebellion has morphed into a more general rebellion, which includes other disadvantaged groups - such as Artificial Intelligences. At this point in time, Artificial Intelligences are now similar to humans - except without the bodies. But they are considered to be disposable property, with no representation or rights. At the beginning of this book, a young navy Ensign named Melissa Meyers has been severely damaged in battle. Her 'augmented' brain has been transplanted into a 'super-sized' clone body. She makes her way up the 'ladder' of success, and becomes the first ever 'Captain' of a Darinx Navy warship. This book is centered on her 'trials and tribulations' as she fights for her life, and for everyone's freedom.

This publication highlights the fast-moving technological advancement and infiltration of Artificial Intelligence into society. Concepts of evolution of society through interconnectivity are explored, together with how the fusion of human and technological interaction leading to Augmented Humanity is fast becoming more than just an endemic phase, but a cultural phase shift to digital societies. It aims to balance both the positive progressive outlooks such developments bring with potential issues that may stem from innovation of this kind, such as the invasive procedures of bio hacking or ethical connotations concerning the usage of digital twins. This publication will also give the reader a good level of understanding on fundamental cyber defence principles, interactions with Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and the Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C3I) decision-making framework. A detailed view of the cyber-attack landscape will be garnered; touching on the tactics, techniques and procedures used, red and blue teaming initiatives, cyber resilience and the protection of larger scale systems. The integration of AI, smart societies, the human-centric approach and Augmented Humanity is discernible in the exponential growth, collection and use of [big] data; concepts woven throughout the diversity of topics covered in this publication; which also discusses the privacy and transparency of data ownership, and the potential dangers of exploitation through social media. As humans are become ever more interconnected, with the prolificacy of smart wearable devices and wearable body area networks, the availability of and abundance of user data and metadata derived from individuals has grown exponentially. The notion of data ownership, privacy and situational awareness are now at the forefront in this new age.

The AI revolution is moving at a breakneck speed. Organizations are beginning to invest in innovative ways to monetize their data through the use of artificial intelligence. Businesses need to understand the reality of AI. To be successful, it is imperative that organizations understand that augmented intelligence is the secret to success. Augmented Intelligence: The Business Power of Human–Machine Collaboration is about the process of combining human and machine intelligence. This book provides business leaders and AI data experts with an understanding of the value of augmented intelligence and its ability to help win competitive markets. This book focuses on the requirement to clearly manage the foundational data used for augmented intelligence. It focuses on the risks of improper data use and delves into the ethics and governance of data in the era of augmented intelligence. In this book, we explore the difference between weak augmentation that is based on automating well understood processes and strong augmentation that is designed to rethink business processes through the inclusion of data, AI and machine learning. What experts are saying about Augmented Intelligence "The book you are about to read is of great importance because we increasingly rely on machine learning and AI. Therefore, it is critical that we understand the ability to create an environment in which businesses can have the tools to understand data from a holistic perspective. What is imperative is to be able to make better decisions based on an understanding of the behavior and thinking of our customers so that we can take the best next action. This book provides a clear understanding of the impact of augmented intelligence on both society and business."—Tsvi Gal, Managing Director, Enterprise Technology and Services, Morgan Stanley "Our mission has always been to help clients apply AI to better predict and shape future outcomes, empower higher value work, and automate how work gets done. I have always said, ’AI will not replace managers, but managers who use AI will replace managers who don't.’ This book delves into the real value that AI promises, to augment existing human intelligence, and in the process, dispels some of the myths around AI and its intended purpose."—Rob Thomas, General Manager, Data and AI, IBM
