In Yemen, where current poverty is combined with a rich cultural heritage, the distinctions between the traditional and the modern are particularly difficult. First published in 1979, this is a study of social change as experienced and perceived by the women of San’a, the capital city of North Yemen. It presents a synthesised view of the process of change rather than focusing on the issues of exploitation and emancipation, and draws upon observations of women’s daily routine and ritual activities as well as the media and the provocative insights of Yemeni poets. The veil is the focus of the study because it can be seen as a symbol of the contradictions inherent in Yemeni society, not just about the female but also about all social relations. It can be interpreted as both an instrument of oppression and the incitement of liberation and is thus illustrative of deep cultural ambiguities. This book will be of interest to those studying women, gender, Islam, the Middle East and anthropology.

A terrorist. Two hostages. A desert lair in Yemen. Appearances can be deceiving... Captive inside the terrorist's lair, Kelliana Coleman screams at Assad, "the Lion" "I'm not supposed to be here " Ripped from her husband and children in a deadly explosion, Kelliana is trapped in Assad's vendetta against Jesse Fairway, an evangelist she despises. Her cries, "But I'm not his wife " go ignored as she is thrown with Jesse into a brutal den of abuse and hatred. Kelliana is determined to barricade her heart from further pain. An advocate for coexistence, Kelliana spurns Jesse, blaming him for her situation. But the hut they share is small and home is far away. Then Assad's sister enters their lives, hinting that all is not what it seems. As children play in dusty alleys and village women drop their veils for afternoon tea, Kelli and Jesse settle into a tolerable routine. Their relative peace is short-lived. Swallowed by mounting village tensions, rival terrorists prepare to collide. One claims Kelli as his wife, vowing to make her a Muslim. Pregnant and ill, Kelliana narrowly escapes with Jesse across the Saudi border. But the couple has yet to learn that their greatest challenge awaits at home.

“Proud, defiant, brave, these are the Muslim women of America. Hear them roar!” —Asma Gull Hasan, author of Why I Am a Muslim For years, the image of the Muslim woman in America has been as mysterious as the face behind the veil. Is she garbed in the traditional hijab and chador? Is she subservient to a male-dominated culture and religion? Does she grocery shop, do her nails, go to the gym? “A superb attempt at helping us to discover the emerging identity of American Muslim women.” —Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed, Islamic Society of North America In this moving book, journalist Donna Gehrke-White provides a rare, revealing look into the hearts, minds, and everyday lives of Muslim women in America. Here, in their own words, are the many different voices of doctors, soccer moms, rebels, reformers, former political prisoners, survivors, and activists—women of faith, courage, hope, and change—all Muslims, all Americans. “Enlightening. . . . In their diversity, forthrightness, and honesty, the voices of these women ultimately sound more American than anything else—and therein lies the strength of this book.” —Library Journal

The Middle East has long been something of a mystery to Westerners, and in particular, the sexual mores of the region continue to fascinate. Arabs are often described as being in a state of Islam-induced sexual anxiety and young Muslims' frustrations are said to be exacerbated by increasing exposure to the licentiousness of the West. Here, Middle East expert John R. Bradley sets out to uncover the truth about sex in countries like Egypt, Syria, Morocco and Yemen. Among many startling revelations, Bradley reports on how "temporary" Islamic marriages allow for illicit sex in the theocracies of Iran and Saudi Arabia; "child brides" that are sold off to older Arab men according to ancient tribal traditions; the hypocrisy that undermines publicized crackdowns on the thriving sex industry in the Persian Gulf; and how, despite widespread denial, homosexuality is still deeply ingrained in the region's social fabric. Richly detailed and nuanced, Behind the Veil of Vice sheds light on a taboo subject and unravels widely held myths about the region. In the process, Bradley also delivers an important message about our own society's contradictions.
