The evolution of Hinduism has been a saga of continuous progression from the unreal to the real, from the profane to the profound, in successive stages of human development. A study of Sri Aurobindo's "Savitri" in the light of the Bhagavad Gita which was awarded the doctorate in English by the University of Calicut in 1996 is being now published on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo. The thesis was an attempt to establish the intimations of intimacy between Sri Aurobindo's epic poem "Savitri" and the Bhagavad Gita. The influence of the Gita on Sri Aurobindo is well known starting with his vision of Krishna at the Alipore jail and by his own statement that he was not only able to understand intellectually but also realize what Sri Krishna demanded of Arjuna. The cardinal teaching of Gita, "Vasudeva Sarvam iti" provided for him the bedrock of his philosophy in "Savitri". The spiritual revolution he envisioned in "Savitri" is that the universe is a manifestation of consciousness occurring in an integral process. Modern quantum physics is bearing many similarities with his ideas. Thus while "Savitri" is a symbol of struggle, redemption, and the incarnation of a divine mother who restores the Golden age, the Bhagavad Gita teaches the same call to the eternal avatar in each being and to the establishment of Sat-Chit-Ananda on the terrestrial plane.
