A lot can happen in 3 Seconds. It's the space of time between walking onstage and stepping up to the mic. It’s that moment when your eyes meet across a crowded room and the chemistry between you is undeniable. Bronagh has accomplished a lot in her thirty-five years. A successful pub owner and happy divorcée, she's learned to enjoy life, but have realistic expectations. Her past has taught her that it's best not to depend on others, but that doesn't mean she won't sample a tasty morsel when it's right in front of her. After taking a break from culinary school to travel abroad, Brendan is back and eager to finish what he started. Although he relishes the nights he gets to play with his brothers in their band, and enjoys their healthy supply of groupies, he's ready to start acting like the twenty-something that he is…a fact he craves to prove with Bronagh. What starts as a one-night-stand becomes more when Bronagh and Brendan realize that they can't walk away. But can a younger man who's prone to late nights and scantily-clad women convince a woman who's been hurt that age doesn't matter, and he's the man she needs?

Motherhood is one of those roles that assumes an almost-outsized cultural importance in the significance we force it to bear. It becomes both the source of and the repository for all kinds of cultural fears. Its ubiquity perhaps makes it this perfect foil. After all, while not everyone will become a mother, everyone has a mother. When we force motherhood to bear the terrors of what it means to be human, we inflict trauma upon those who mother. A long tradition of bad mothers thus shapes contemporary mothering practices (and the way we view them), including the murderous Medea of Greek mythology, the power-hungry Queen Gertrude of Hamlet, and the emasculating mother of Freud's theories. Certainly, there are mother who cause harm, inflict abuse, act monstrously. Mothers are human. But mothers are also a favourite and easy scapegoat. The contributors to this collection explore a multitude of interdisciplinary representations of mothers that, through their very depictions of bad mothering, challenge the tropes of monstrous mothering that we lean on, revealing in the process why we turn to them. Chapters in Monstrous Mothers: Troubling Tropes explore literary, cinematic, and real-life monstrous mothers, seeking to uncover social sources and results of these monstrosities.

Abandoned by those in whom she has placed her trust, a desperate mother suffers a mental breakdown and is deprived of her children. It is October 1969 in Northern Ireland as trouble begins to erupt, threatening the peace of the land and its people. Before heading out on the town for the night, four boys—all named Billy—decide to give each other nicknames. As the Billys, now named Pedro, Pablo, Cochise, and Rodin, arrive at the Flamingo Ballroom, Rodin spots three girls he has never seen before. One of the girls is Mary Whyte, a Roman Catholic from Rasharkin, a village outside Ballymena. Her companions are her sister, Bronagh, and their cousin, Niamh. After spending some time together, Mary completely captures Rodin’s mind and heart. When they all bid each other farewell, none realize the impact that the encounter will have on all of them, but especially Rodin. As a chain of events unfolds over the years, their lives take unusual turns that lead to an unfortunate estrangement, an eventual reunion, and a monumental dying wish. Mary Whyte Was Right Pedro is the tale of several teenagers living in Northern Ireland during troubled times as they mature, face challenges, and realize the power of one encounter.
