In this paper we present new burn rate results for several energetic materials. The burn rates of octahydro- 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), HMX and estane-based binder (PBX 9501), 1,3,5-triamino- 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB), and TATB and KelF binder (PBX 9502), are reported and compared with existing data. Burn rate data of these common explosives complement and extend existing data sets. Burn rate data of three novel high-nitrogen materials are presented in this work. Specifically, the high-nitrogen monopropellants considered are 3,6-dihydrazino-s-tetrazine (DHT), 4,4'-diamino-3,3' -azoxyfurazan (DAAF), and 3,6-bis(1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-amino)-s-tetrazine (BTATz). High-nitrogen compounds may be key to meeting the advanced performance objectives of next-generation solid propellants. High-nitrogen solids offer the possibility of high performance, reduced emissions, and lower plume signature (low temperature and no HCl) than current propellant systems. The theoretical specific impulse is comparable to HMX. In contrast to HMX, however, high-nitrogen materials tend to be insensitive to impact. Because high-nitrogen energetic materials have intrinsically large positive heats of formation and produce low-molecular-weight reaction products, they may be suitable for consideration in high-performance propellant applications. BTATz appears particularly interesting because of its rapid burn rate, relatively low-pressure exponent, and high heat of formation. The effect of a small amount of binder is investigated for all but one of these materials.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is an incredible place. It was conceived and born amidst the most desperate of circumstances. It attracted some of the most brilliant minds, the most innovative entrepreneurs, and the most c- ative tinkerers of that generation. Out of that milieu emerged physics and engineering that beforehand was either unimagined, or thought to be f- tasy. One of the ?elds essentially invented during those years was the science of precision high explosives. Before 1942, explosives were used in munitions and commercial pursuits that demanded proper chemistry and con?nement for the necessary e?ect, but little else. The needs and requirements of the Manhattan project were of a much more precise and speci?c nature. Spatial and temporal speci?cations were reduced from centimeters and milliseconds to micrometers and nanoseconds. New theory and computational tools were required along with a raft of new experimental techniques and novel ways of interpreting the results. Over the next 40 years, the emphasis was on higher energy in smaller packages, more precise initiation schemes, better and safer formulations, and greater accuracy in forecasting performance. Researchers from many institutions began working in the emerging and expanding ?eld. In the midst of all of the work and progress in precision initiation and scienti?c study, in the early 1960s, papers began to appear detailing the ?rst quantitative studies of the transition from de?agration to detonation (DDT), ?rst in cast, then in pressed explosives, and ?nally in propellants.

This book represents a collection of lectures presented at the NATO Advanced study Institute(ASI) on "Chemistry & Physics of the Molecular Processes in Energetic Materials", held at Hotel Torre Normanna, Altavilla Milicia, Sicily, Italy, September 3 to 15, 1989. The institute was attended by seventy participants including twenty lecturers, drawn from thirteen countries. The purpose of the institute was to review the major ad vances made in recent years in the theoretical and experi mental aspects of explosives and propellants. In accordance with the format of the NATO ASI, it was arranged to have a relatively small number of speakers to present in depth, re view type lectures emphasizing the basic research aspects of the subject, over a two week period. Most of the speakers gave two lectures, each in excess of one hour with addition al time for discussions. The scope of the meeting was limit ed to molecular and spectroscopic studies since the hydro dynamic aspects of detonation and various performance crite ria of energetic materials are often covered adequately in other international meetings. An attempt was made to have a coherent presentation of various theoretical, computational and spectroscopic approaches to help a better understanding of energetic materials from a molecular point of view. The progress already made in these areas is such that structure property (e. g.
