Mineral Dust written by Peter Knippertz and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-01 with Science categories.

This volume presents state-of-the-art research about mineral dust, including results from field campaigns, satellite observations, laboratory studies, computer modelling and theoretical studies. Dust research is a new, dynamic and fast-growing area of science and due to its multiple roles in the Earth system, dust has become a fascinating topic for many scientific disciplines. Aspects of dust research covered in this book reach from timescales of minutes (as with dust devils, cloud processes and radiation) to millennia (as with loess formation and oceanic sediments), making dust both a player and recorder of environmental change. The book is structured in four main parts that explore characteristics of dust, the global dust cycle, impacts of dust on the Earth system, and dust as a climate indicator. The chapters in these parts provide a comprehensive, detailed overview of this highly interdisciplinary subject. The contributions presented here cover dust from source to sink and describe all the processes dust particles undergo while travelling through the atmosphere. Chapters explore how dust is lifted and transported, how it affects radiation, clouds, regional circulations, precipitation and chemical processes in the atmosphere and how it deteriorates air quality. The book explores how dust is removed from the atmosphere by gravitational settling, turbulence or precipitation, how iron contained in dust fertilizes terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and about the role that dust plays in human health. We learn how dust is observed, simulated using computer models and forecast. The book also details the role of dust deposits for climate reconstructions. Scientific observations and results are presented, along with numerous illustrations. This work has an interdisciplinary appeal and will engage scholars in geology, geography, chemistry, meteorology and physics, amongst others with an interest in the Earth system and environmental change. body>

No matter how much you fight it, dust pervades everything. It gathers in layers, adapting to the contours of things and marking the passage of time. It is also a gathering place, a random community of what has been and what is yet to be, a catalog of traces, and a set of promises: dead skin cells and plant pollen, hair and paper fibers, not to mention the dust mites who make it their home. Dust blurs the boundaries between the living and the dead, plant and animal matter, the inside and the outside, you and the world ("for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return:). Michael Marder's Dust delves into one of the most mundane and familiar phenomena, finding in it a key to thinking about existence, community, and justice today. -- Inside cover flap.

A major surprise of the Apollo Moon missions was the deleterious impact of lunar dust on the astronauts, their spacesuits and other equipment, and even inside the Command/Service Module during their return to Earth. Lunar dust permeated everything and impacted mechanical systems. The dust on the Moon’s surface was disturbed and became airborne by the routine actions of the astronauts as they walked and performed their exploration of the lunar surface. Over the last decade, as NASA’s plans for the human exploration of Mars have developed and matured, a major concern has been the possible negative impacts of Mars surface and atmospheric dust on human health and on the human surface systems and surface operations on the Red Planet. In this book, 41 Mars scientists, mission engineers and planners and medical researchers have reviewed our current understanding and identified the knowledge gaps in a wide range of areas, including the chemical, physical and electrical properties of Mars atmospheric dust; the evolution and occurrence of localized, regional and planetary-scale dust storms; the human health effects of Mars atmospheric dust, including inhalation of and potential toxicity of dust particles; and the impact of Mars atmospheric dust on surface systems and on surface operations, among others.

Kenya, 2007. Odidi Oganda, running for his life, is gunned down in the streets of Nairobi. His sister, Ajany, and their father bring his body back home, to a crumbling colonial house in northern Kenya. But the peace they seek is hard to find: the murder has stirred deeply buried memories of colonial violence, of the killing-sprees of the Mau Mau uprising, and the shocking political assassination of Tom Mboya in 1969. When a young Englishman appears, searching for his missing father, another story, of love, or at least a connection, begins. This is a spellbinding state of the nation novel about Kenya, showing how the violence of the past informs the violence and disorder of the present. Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor's memorable characters; Ajany's mother, deranged with grief and past violations, the Trader, embodying the timeless nomadic traders of Sudan, and Odidi himself, who transcended his past, came to success, and then a tragic end, are enchanting. Owuor reveals to us a new Kenya, a Kenya of bloodshed but also of modernity, suffused with a spirit world only half-remembered. This is a country where the characters listen so acutely for what is not said, and for the voices from the distant and recent past.

Dust Free Friends written by 6a Architects and has been published by Park Publishing (WI) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Furniture making categories.

Dust Free Friends is a series of designs for small pieces of domestic furniture, designed by London-based 6a architects, that can be made very simply at home, in restricted spaces, with a small number of tools and without specialist skills. The lightness and simplicity of the pieces is derived from a combination of observation of the way simple plywood constructions on a construction site are adapted to become stools, tables, steps, and stairs, changing quickly and without fuss as workers need them. The designs also re-examine the long tradition of self-build that has shared the journey through modernism with industry and craft. In the early 1970s, Italian designer Enzo Mari (born 1932) published his seminal book of self-build furniture, Autoprogettazione ("Self-design," "Self-production," "Self-build" http: //www.corraini.com/en/catalogo/scheda_libro/62/Autoprogettazione), in direct competition with an expanding consumer market. Using rough sawn softwood, held together only by nails, the method matched the ad-hoc-ism and toolset of the time. Forty years later, affordable designer consumerism has more or less replaced old-fashioned messy DIY from our homes. Apple and Ikea have replaced amateurish tinkering with pleasure and promise sealed inside immaculate capsules. Today, the new lithium batteries at the heart of our wireless world have also revolutionized what we can do. With the cordless drill and self-tapping screw in one hand and the dust-free precision of the Festool saw in the other, the world of self-made furniture has re-opened with unprecedented speed and ease. With the Dust Free Friends series, Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald invite the reader of this new book to make his or her own everyday furniture from dressed plywood. The rules the lay-out are easy to follow, end even more easy to change, to make best use of the sheet of plywood with the smallest number of cuts and least wastage. While almost every household has a cordless drill, rather fewer have a handheld electric saw. It is a useful addition but this can also be borrowed or rented--try your nearest designer, artist, or architect friend, there is bound to be one nearby. Precision and patience are more important than skill. Beautifully produced and illustrated with some 90 easy-to-understand diagrams and images, Dust Free Friends is a comprehensive, precise, and entertaining, manual to furnishing a comfortable place entirely by its users.

Methods In Chemical Process Safety written by Faisal Khan and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Process safety is a disciplined framework for managing the integrity of operating systems and processes handling hazardous substances. Continued occurrence of major losses have had a significant impact on the industry's approaches to modern process safety. Consequently, the process safety management is now globally recognized as the primary approach for establishing the level of safety in operations required to manage high-hazard processes. With this in mind, and also due to the evolution in regulatory thinking that integrated traditional occupational safety with process safety, several process safety methods were developed by industry associations around the world. Although all these methods share the same basic objectives, the number of program elements may vary depending on the criteria used. Consequently, selecting the best method to chemical process safety could be challenging due to the existence of different options. I decided to write this project to address this challenge by provide an overview of the most important recent advancements and contributions in chemical process safety. The project helps researchers and professionals to obtain guidance on the selection and practice of chemical process safety methods. The main features of this volume are: To acquaint the reader/researcher with the fundamentals of the process safety To provide most recent advancements and contributions in the given topic from practical point of view To provide readers views/opinions of the expert in each topic To provide guidance on the practice of the given topic The selection of the author(s) of each chapter from among the leading researchers and/or practitioners for each given topic
