Realizing that American General Douglas MacArthur was still in the Phillipines immediately following their surprise attach on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, the Japanese military organization under Prime Minister and Army General Tojo believed that the U.S. Government would probably recall or reassign MacArthur the newly appointed Commander of all non-Naval activities in the Far Eastern, Asiatic Theatre of Operations. This is the exciting fast-moving story of how General MacArthur, his wife and young son Arthur IV, were captured by the Japanese Navy immediately following their escape on a P.T. boat from the island fortress of Corregidor at the tip of the Bataan peninsula in Manila Bay, and how MacArthur was able to befriend and convince Japan’s Emperor Hirohito that continuation of the war between the United States and Japan should be ended as soon as possible. MacArthur felt it made no sense to go on killing people in view of the friendship that America and Japan had enjoyed for so many years prior to Japan’s decision to attack Pearl Harbor, which decision Japan made because President Roosevelt had threatened to completely cut off Japan’s oil imports unless Japan immediately withdrew its army from French Indo China. REVIEW: “Great story – wish it had happened this way.” Jeff Whited, Amherst, Ohio

Escape From Bataan written by Ross E. Hofmann and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-04 with History categories.

U.S. Navy Supply Corps Ensign Ross Hofmann had no idea what was in store for him when he arrived at Cavite Naval Base in October 1941. Two months later, Japanese forces struck the Philippines, destroying the base and forcing U.S. personnel to retreat to Bataan. There, Hofmann joined a makeshift unit of Army Aircorps ground personnel, U.S. Marines, U.S. sailors, U.S. Naval ground battalions and Filipinos to fight a Japanese force that landed nearby. In March 1942, with the fall of Bataan imminent, he traveled to Cebu to run supplies through the blockade of Bataan and Corregidor. Soon after his arrival, the Japanese landed on Cebu, forcing the Americans to retreat again. Hiking through jungles and crossing dangerous waters in barely seaworthy vessels, Hofmann avoided capture and reached an American base in Mindanao. He received orders to establish a seaplane base on Lake Lanao. As Japanese troops landed nearby, two seaplanes returning from Corregidor stopped to refuel, one of them hitting a submerged rock on take-off. In a harrowing race against the enemy advance, Hofmann and others worked feverishly to fix the plane and escape before the Japanese converged on Lake Lanao. This memoir recounts Hofmann’s experiences in vivid detail. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

"This is not only one of the best of the war books, it is a record of cooperative courage achieved by a group of men in a manner wholly American." The New York Times At the outbreak of the Second World War U.S.S. Quail was in the Philippines sweeping mines to provide access for American shipping to South Harbor, Corregidor. Damaged by enemy bombs and guns during the Japanese invasion of the island John Morrill and his fellow men decided to make the decision to scuttle their ship rather than allow it to be captured. This led them to begin one of the most daring escapes of the Second World War. Lieutenant Commander John Morrill and sixteen fellow sailors took a thirty-six-foot diesel boat nearly two thousand miles through Japanese controlled waters. They moved mostly at night, with a homemade sextant, some salvaged charts, with little fresh water and food, but even despite these difficulties they eventually made their way to Darwin, Australia. "nonfiction account of his breathtaking escape in 1942 from the Japanese at Corregidor, the beleaguered U.S. fortress commanding Manila Bay in the Philippines." The Washington Post "The enthralling story of how a handful of Navy men escaped from falling Corregidor southward to Australia in a leaky 36-foot landing boat." Foreign Affairs "A matter of fact, modest and inherently dramatic account of an isolated incident in the pacific war" Kirkus Reviews John Morrill was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. In June 1939 he became commanding officer of the minesweeper U.S.S. Quail. Pete Martin was a journalist and author. Their book South from Corregidor was first published in 1943. Pete Martin passed away in 1980 and John Morrill passed away in 1997.

Among the more than 260 American submarines that patrolled the Pacific during World War II, the USS Swordfish in 1941 was the first to sink a Japanese armed merchant ship, marking the beginning of the submarine's colorful history. A series of seven commanders led Swordfish's 13 war patrols. Each skipper had a distinct leadership style. Some were successful in sinking enemy ships; others returned to port empty-handed. Yet all patrols risked dangerously close encounters with the enemy and the unforgiving nature of the open sea. Drawing on archival sources and interviews with veteran sailors, this first full-length history of the Swordfish provides detailed accounts of each patrol and covers the mysterious disappearance of the legendary submarine on its final mission.
