Excerpt from The Highway of Letters and Its Echoes of Famous Footsteps In these days of ruthless removal of ancient landmarks, we never know for how long any locality may be spared to us. In London, at any rate, objects which to-day are so familiar to the wayfarer in the streets that he is ready to regard them as monuments, will to-morrow have disappeared, and he will be left idly gaping at an empty space, which gapes at him in return. The demolition of the remnant of some ancient houses in Fleet Street not unnaturally suggested that the street itself - latterly, with architectural attractions except for some large and imposing piles of buildings here and there, incongruously breaking the sordid monotony of the shabby shops and houses - has been, since the first makers of English traversed it, "The Highway of Letters." It therefore seemed fitting that some kind of memorial should be written concerning it in that aspect. The present volume does not, it, is almost needless to say, profess to be more than a gossipy reference to people and achievements which characterise the story of Fleet Street in its relation to tho growth of literature and to changes in social and political aspects at various periods. If you want a play-by-play account of important operations and key people during the Irish Civil War... this is your book!Kathleen Hegarty Thorne's love of Ireland and its fighting men and women ignited in 1992 during a visit to the Hegarty cottage in Ballinaheglish, County Roscommon, where the echoes of the footsteps of her deceased great-uncle and his comrades had fallen silent o'er the fields. In 2005 she introduced her first Irish tome, They Put the Flag a-Flyin', The Roscommon Volunteers 1913 to 1923, now in its third edition. Her next book, Echoes of Their Footsteps, Volume I, is a history of Ireland's War of Independence countrywide, including the months between the Truce and the beginning of the Irish Civil War. This edition, Echoes of Their Foot¬steps, Volume II, documents the actions of men and women dedicated to Ireland's freedom, the well-planned but sometimes desperate attacks and ambushes, the political pronouncements of figureheads, and the sorrowful events that engulfed the soul of the people of Ireland during the years 1922 through 1924.

"Cultural Studies" has emerged in British and American higher education as a movement that challenges the traditional humanities and social science disciplines. Influenced by the New Left, feminism, and poststructualist literary theory, cultural studies seeks to analyze everday life and the social construction of "subjectivities." Crusoe's Footprints encompasses the movement of many colleges and universities in the 1960s towards such interdisciplinary and "radical" programs as American Studies, Women's Studies, and Afro-American Studies. Brantlinger also examines the role of feminist criticism which has been particularly crucial in both Britain and the U.S.

To travel to Jerusalem or other places where the events of the Bible and life of Jesus took place, is not merely like any other trip. A Christian literally receives grace, and becomes closer to God as a result. This book is a type of "adventure narrative" or spiritual odyssey: a firsthand report of what it felt like for our party of five as we traveled to all these holy sites in Israel. I will also be detailing some of the exciting archaeological discoveries that have been occurring in Israel and Jordan, and almost literally revolutionizing the field of biblical archaeology, and utilizing scriptural references to relate the places we visit to biblical history; along with the occasional exposition of the text. My hope is that a lively sense of the pilgrimage can be directly conveyed to the reader. For those, particularly who may never be able to visit the Holy Land, the goal is to make our pilgrimage come alive for you: so that you can experience something of what we felt.

Excerpt from Footsteps of Our Forefathers: What They Suffered and What They Sought; Describing Localities, and Portraying Personages and Events Conspicuous in the Struggles for Religious Liberty The design of the following work is to exhibit, in a form as little repulsive as the nature of the subject will allow, some of the phenomena of Religious Intolerance, especially as it has been displayed in a Protestant form, and to indicate the mistaken principle in which these melancholy results have had their origin. It has been no part of the author's aim to advocate any distinctive form of doctrine or polity; but rather to show how any religious system, whether Episcopal, Presbyterian or Congregational, may become vitiated and perverted by its alliance with the powers of the state, and by the assumption, exclusiveness and worldly pride, which such a connection invariably engenders. The sequel to the award-winning Stepping on the Cracks. “Sometimes heart-rending, sometimes funny, Gordy Smith will prove memorable to all who meet him.”—Booklist (starred review) In Following My Own Footsteps, sixth-grader Gordy Smith comes to grips with the fear that he’ll turn out no better than his abusive father . . . With his father now in jail and one brother hospitalized, Gordy’s mother has no choice but to take the family to their wealthy grandmother’s house in North Carolina. There Gordy meets William, a boy who had polio and is now wheelchair bound. Though they become friends, Gordy’s plans to help William fail spectacularly. Matters only get worse when Gordy’s father is released from prison and his mother is poised to give him a second chance. Gordy must decide where he belongs—with his dysfunctional parents or with the grandma who is more than his match in toughness, in courage, and in love. “A cast of unforgettable characters inhabit this work, seasoned with WW II setting but utterly contemporary in its concerns. Hahn is in top form, proving through Gordy’s first-person narration that real love can triumph over all kinds of adversity, and often does.”—Kirkus Reviews “The complex characterizations, period setting and Gordy’s brave attempts to break a cycle of violence will hold readers’ interest.”—Publishers Weekly “It’s a timeless social issue really, in any era, of having a dysfunctional abusive parent . . . A very good story showcasing complex friendships, familial relationships, and inner conflict, all set in WW2 America.”—Cats and Fiction

Oliver Cromwell is one of the most important figures in British History. He was both soldier and politician and the only non-Royal ruler of Britain in a thousand years. His actions and ideas still have political and social consequences today, and his legacy still divides people. Love him or loathe him, Cromwell still matters. This book is a history of his life through the places in Britain and Ireland where he lived, visited, ruled or fought. _Following in the Footsteps of Oliver Cromwell_ begins in Huntingdon in 1599, with the respectable but unimportant Cromwell family living under the shadow of richer relatives. Civil War and Cromwell's controversial successes at Marston Moor, Naseby, Basing House and Worcester transform him into the most powerful person in Britain, saving him from obscurity and moving him from a modest house in Ely to Hampton Court Palace. Cromwell is involved in the execution of King Charles I outside the Banqueting House, his own coronation in Westminster Hall, and bloody slaughter in Ireland. His death in 1658 does not end the controversy. His enemies take revenge on his corpse and the debate about his legacy begins.
