Although largely forgotten now, the 1885 trial of German artist Gustav Graef was a seminal event for those who observed it. Graef, a celebrated sixty-four-year-old portraitist, was accused of perjury and sexual impropriety with underage models. On trial alongside him was one of his former models, the twenty-one-year-old Bertha Rother, who quickly became a central figure in the affair. As the case was being heard, images of Rother, including photographic reproductions of Graef's nude paintings of her, began to flood the art shops and bookstores of Berlin and spread across Europe. Spurred by this trade in images and by sensational coverage in the press, this former prostitute was transformed into an international sex symbol and a target of both public lust and scorn. Passionate discussions of the case echoed in the press for months, and the episode lasted in public memory for far longer. The Graef trial, however, was much more than a salacious story that served as public entertainment. The case inspired fierce political debates long after a verdict was delivered, including disputes about obscenity laws, the moral degeneracy of modern art and artists, the alleged pernicious effects of Jewish influence, legal restrictions on prostitution, the causes of urban criminality, the impact of sensationalized press coverage, and the requirements of bourgeois masculine honor. Above all, the case unleashed withering public criticism of a criminal justice system that many Germans agreed had become entirely dysfunctional. The story of the Graef trial offers a unique perspective on a German Empire that was at the height of its power, yet riven with deep political, social, and cultural divisions. This compelling study will appeal to historians and students of modern German and European history, as well as those interested in obscenity law and class and gender relations in nineteenth-century Europe.

[The Fight against Corruption. Theological Approaches and Requests in History and Present] Currently there is to hear so much about the fighting against corruption nationally and internationally, but only a few posts come from the theology. This also has to do with conceptual ambiguities. The spectrum extends from business "favors" and MPs bribery in antiquity and modernity, about medieval indulgences, and the long until the present usual purchase of offices, up to using the term 'corruption' as a tool in political struggles. Often one wants to counter corruption in particular through the adoption of harsh laws. So worth supporting such measures, their widespread ineffectiveness affirms the theological insight that corruption has to do with the basic "sinfulness" of man. Therefore, it must be also the task of Christian churches in addition to supporting juridical and economic practices in the fight against corruption to exhibit first, how much corruption threatens to destroy the foundations of our society in the framework of the popular image of man embossed by rationality, but also by greed, and then, how this thinking and behavior can be overcome from the perspective of the Christian human being.

The pallium was effective because it was a gift with strings attached. This band of white wool encircling the shoulders had been a papal insigne and liturgical vestment since late antiquity. It grew in prominence when the popes began to bestow it regularly on other bishops as a mark of distinction and a sign of their bond to the Roman church. Bonds of Wool analyzes how, through adroit manipulation, this gift came to function as an instrument of papal influence. It explores an abundant array of evidence from diverse genres - including chronicles and letters, saints' lives and canonical collections, polemical treatises and liturgical commentaries, and hundreds of papal privileges - stretching from the eighth century to the thirteenth and representing nearly every region of Western Europe. These sources reveal that the papal conferral of the pallium was an occasion for intervening in local churches throughout the West and a means of examining, approving, and even disciplining key bishops, who were eventually required to request the pallium from Rome.

[Christian Anti-Semitism in the German Kaiserreich. Adolf Stoecker as reflected through his contemporary critics] Adolf Stoecker (1835–1909) was a protestant court-priest and Christian-social politician. In his time he was known for his reformist political views based on Christian-conservativism as well as his anti-semitic agitation. His involvement in the debates around the so-called »Jewish Question« in the German Kaiserreich was marked by a decidedly Christian form of Anti-Semitism. His anti-Jewish statements were rebutted by people from diverse political, ecclesiastical and societal backgrounds including Jews and non-Jews. Between 1879 and 1900 the debates around the »Jewish Question« occured in three phases: an initial phase, a phase of politization, and a phase in which it became institutional. During these phases, particular conflicts exhibit various constellations of actors and topics, as well as the complex interaction between religious, social, political and economic dimensions in the relationship between German Jews and Protestants in the German Kaiserreich.
