Welcome to the world of the Appalachian Trail. Every year, thousands of pilgrims arrive at Georgia's Springer Mountain and set off with hopes of reaching Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Roughly ten percent ever complete the journey. It's more than likely that in the AT's long, storied history, Walter is the first person to thru-hike against his will. He is out-of-shape, out-of-sorts and, now that his wife has decided enough is enough, he's out of the house too. It's that classic scenario: Hike or ELSE! Since the poor, morose Walter can't figure an 'ELSE' he sets off on the longest walk of his life. While braving the great Eastern woods, Walter meets an eclectic cast of hopeful thru-hikers. As they journey northward, this rollicking band suffers through every hardship that America's premiere hiking trail can throw at them. It isn't long before Walter is looking at life through new eyes and just maybe for the first time in forever, starting to feel better about the world and his place in it.But no way is that alone going to be enough to get him to Maine.

This illustrated book is an account of my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and it was written to help answer questions for those who wish to take on an A.T. thru-hike. As I was preparing for my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, I was very fortunate to have a dad who had over thirty years of hiking experience and an uncle who also had thirty years of hiking experience. I had two great resources for hiking and backpacking within my family. Yet, I realized that not everybody has that at their disposal when they are preparing for their thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I began searching for books specifically about how to prepare for an Appalachian Trail thru-hike. They all pretty much said the same thing, which wasn't much. They would say to sit down, plan out your entire hike beforehand, and then toss that plan out the window; because you never know what's going to happen on the Trail. All the books I found were more about the author's experience on the Trail than about the actual preparation for the hike. During my hike, I observed various ways that hikers had prepared, the different ways they chose to camp, and all the different ways hikers chose to go about their thru-hike. It fascinated me as I saw how everyone had their own way to hike the Trail. As thru-hikers often say: Hike your own hike. After about 1,000 miles into my thru-hike, I began to ponder a series of thoughts while sitting in camp around the fire. I would envision this inexperienced hiker walking up looking for a place to set up camp, probably on his first backpacking trip. If this supposed hiker sat down by the fire and asked me a question; for example about how to waterproof boots, the best way to purify drinking water, or the best way to set up camp in the rain...what would I tell this hiker? The more I thought about it, the more I began to think about the answers I had found from my own questions. Eventually that one thought of, "...what would I tell an inexperienced hiker?," led to this book. By the time I completed the Appalachian Trail, this book was already written inside my head. And now, I am proud to say this book is written down on paper. If you truly have questions about preparing for an extended hike like the Appalachian Trail, I hope you find the answers to your questions within this book.

Walking On The Wild Side written by Kristi M. Fondren and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-11 with Education categories.

The most famous long-distance hiking trail in North America, the 2,181-mile Appalachian Trail—the longest hiking-only footpath in the world—runs along the Appalachian mountain range from Georgia to Maine. Every year about 2,000 individuals attempt to “thru-hike” the entire trail, a feat equivalent to hiking Mount Everest sixteen times. In Walking on the Wild Side, sociologist Kristi M. Fondren traces the stories of forty-six men and women who, for their own personal reasons, set out to conquer America’s most well known, and arguably most social, long-distance hiking trail. In this fascinating in-depth study, Fondren shows how, once out on the trail, this unique subculture of hikers lives mostly in isolation, with their own way of acting, talking, and thinking; their own vocabulary; their own activities and interests; and their own conception of what is significant in life. They tend to be self-disciplined, have an unwavering trust in complete strangers, embrace a life of poverty, and reject modern-day institutions. The volume illuminates the intense social intimacy and bonding that forms among long-distance hikers as they collectively construct a long-distance hiker identity. Fondren describes how long-distance hikers develop a trail persona, underscoring how important a sense of place can be to our identity, and to our sense of who we are. Indeed, the author adds a new dimension to our understanding of the nature of identity in general. Anyone who has hiked—or has ever dreamed of hiking—the Appalachian Trail will find this volume fascinating. Walking on the Wild Side captures a community for whom the trail is a sacred place, a place to which they have become attached, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
