When we come across a happy narrative, we love imagining ourselves living out that story as the main character, yet, when faced with tales of human pain or suffering, we often awkwardly shy away, offer quick condolences, and say “I Can’t Imagine”. Human nature is to relish success, whimsy, and tales of happy endings. But, by avoiding those “other” stories, the painful and uncomfortable ones, we often miss out on some of life’s most important lessons. I Can’t Imagine is one of those “other” stories that will take readers through a powerful journey about a micro-preemie named Emilia Quinn Sears, who was born during a pandemic, at only 22-weeks-old, weighing just over 1 pound, with the odds of survival stacked against her. Inspired by her parents’ personal journals, passionately written to Baby Emilia, this book will take you on an epic journey of loss, love, and resilience. By the end, you will be able to imagine what it is like to fight for your child’s survival in the NICU, ultimately losing your battle and subsequently watching your world get destroyed. You will also experience the beautiful lessons and raw power of purpose that can arise from some of the worst things anyone can imagine.

The Will To Imagine written by J. L. Schellenberg and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-16 with Philosophy categories.

The Will to Imagine completes J. L. Schellenberg's trilogy in the philosophy of religion, following his acclaimed Prolegomena to a Philosophy of Religion and The Wisdom to Doubt. This book marks a striking reversal in our understanding of the possibility of religious faith. Where other works treat religious skepticism as a dead end, The Will to Imagine argues that skepticism is the only point from which a proper beginning in religious inquiry-and in religion itself-can be made. For Schellenberg, our immaturity as a species not only makes justified religious belief impossible but also provides the appropriate context for a type of faith response grounded in imagination rather than belief, directed not to theism but to ultimism, the heart of religion. This new and nonbelieving form of faith, he demonstrates, is quite capable of nourishing an authentic religious life while allowing for inquiry into ways of refining the generic idea that shapes its commitments. A singular feature of Schellenberg's book is his claim, developed in detail, that unsuccessful believers' arguments can successfully be recast as arguments for imaginative faith. Out of the rational failure of traditional forms of religious belief, The Will to Imagine fashions an unconventional form of religion better fitted, Schellenberg argues, to the human species as it exists today and as we may hope it will evolve.

Philosophical Letters Of David K Lewis written by David K. Lewis and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-29 with Philosophy categories.

David Kellogg Lewis (1941-2001) was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. He made significant contributions to almost every area of analytic philosophy including metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science, and set the agenda for various debates in these areas which carry on to this day. In several respects he remains a contemporary figure, yet enough time has now passed for historians of philosophy to begin to study his place in twentieth century thought. His philosophy was constructed and refined not just through his published writing, but also crucially through his life-long correspondence with fellow philosophers, including leading figures such as D.M. Armstrong, Saul Kripke, W.V. Quine, J.J.C. Smart, and Peter van Inwagen. His letters formed the undercurrent of his published work and became the medium through which he proposed many of his well-known theories and discussed a range of philosophical topics in depth. A selection of his vast correspondence over a 40-year period is presented here across two volumes. As metaphysics is arguably where Lewis made his greatest contribution, this forms the focus of Volume 1. Arranged under the broad areas of Causation, Modality, and Ontology, the letters offer an organic story of the origins, development, breadth, and depth of his metaphysics in its historical context, as well as a glimpse into the influence of his many interlocutors. This volume will be an indispensable resource for contemporary metaphysics and for those interested in the Lewisian perspective.

In the year 2093, all of the necessary and unnecessary, required and wanted by people is provided by an artificial intelligent platform called Joogle. Elliott Bourne, a very old and anxious psychologist, is one of only a few people who work. He provides mantra therapy for teenagers who are experiencing hormonal changes at the request of the platform he calls J. In lieu of therapy, he is instructed to teach Grace, a young, bratty fifteen-year-old girl, about what has nearly been erased in this new world--excellence and quality. She grew up in a world where everything was provided for her just like everyone else under the age of sixty. She wears lenses and earpieces that connect her to a virtual world twenty-four seven. Elliott is not pleased with the task he is asked to provide but reluctantly complies and introduces her to the game of chess, a long-forgotten game banned by J. Through their sessions, it is revealed that J has been teaching her in her dreams. Elliott confronts J and learns that he and his colleagues may be wrong about J's motive. The cheeky philosophical science fiction novel explores how the world got to a point where people were granted their greatest desires like the song by John Lennon--no religion, no boundaries, no money. With everything they ever wanted, their way of life becomes dumbed down in Elliott's mind. He holds onto the past and struggles in a world where winning is not necessary. His mind races and dances around the subjects of God, quality, right and wrong. He asks himself if J is the next form of evolution--fish, frog, monkey, man, machine. Grace shows him promise through her struggle transitioning into the real world, and J gives Elliott the choice of a virtual heaven.

Without Her written by Rosalind Brackenbury and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-23 with Fiction categories.

The author of Becoming George Sand has crafted a “standout novel of a tested friendship . . . highlighted by fine prose and finely drawn characters” (Publishers Weekly). When her old friend Hannah doesn’t show up at her house in the south of France, everyone assumes that Claudia, who has known Hannah since their shared years at boarding school, will know where she is and what has happened. But as Claudia travels from the United States to France to help her friend’s husband and children conduct their search, she is forced to deal with her old jealousy of Hannah, as well as her own relationship in the present with her French lover, Alexandre. As events unfold, Claudia begins to wonder if Hannah and Alexandre may have had an affair and if that has something to do with Hannah’s mysterious disappearance. In this exquisitely written, Ferrante-esque novel the question of whether or not Hannah will come back becomes urgent and bewildering. And if she doesn’t return, what will the lives of her friends and family be without her?

New Issues In Epistemological Disjunctivism written by Casey Doyle and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-29 with Philosophy categories.

This is the first volume dedicated solely to the topic of epistemological disjunctivism. The original essays in this volume, written by leading and up-and-coming scholars on the topic, are divided into three thematic sections. The first set of chapters addresses the historical background of epistemological disjunctivism. It features essays on ancient epistemology, Immanuel Kant, J.L. Austin, Edmund Husserl, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. The second section tackles a number contemporary issues related to epistemological disjunctivism, including its relationship with perceptual disjunctivism, radical skepticism, and reasons for belief. Finally, the third group of essays extends the framework of epistemological disjunctivism to other forms of knowledge, such as testimonial knowledge, knowledge of other minds, and self-knowledge. Epistemological Disjunctivism is a timely collection that engages with an increasingly important topic in philosophy. It will appeal to researches and graduate students working in epistemology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of perception.
