L'Italia fra le arti e le scienze, illustrazione di "quell'opera grande e fierissima che è Italia fascista", fu realizzato da Mario Sironi nell'aula magna dell'Università La Sapienza di Roma nel 1935. Nell'ispirazione fascista e nella successiva epurazione dei riferimenti al regime attuata nel 1950, l'opera compendia simbolicamente la parabola di un'epoca della storia italiana, una storia inaugurata nel 1910 col manifesto futurista, inneggiante all'orgoglio di una nuova Italia trionfante, e conclusasi fra le macerie di un'Italia rovinata dalla guerra voluta dal duce. Sopravvissuto al crollo dei miti, chiuso in una "crisalide di disperazione di orrore e di lagrime", senza più "illusioni di trionfi", Sironi morì mentre l'Italia del miracolo economico celebrava orgogliosa il centenario dell'Unità.

First collected volume dealing with the use of Latin under Fascism This book deals with the use of Latin as a literary and epigraphic language under Italian Fascism (1922–1943). The myth of Rome lay at the heart of Italian Fascist ideology, and the ancient language of Rome, too, played an important role in the regime’s cultural politics. This collection deepens our understanding of ‘Fascist Latinity’, presents a range of previously little-known material, and opens up a number of new avenues of research. The chapters explore the pivotal role of Latin in constructing a link between ancient Rome and Fascist Italy; the different social and cultural contexts in which Latin texts functioned in the ventennio fascista; and the way in which ‘Fascist Latinity’ relied on, and manipulated, the ‘myth of Rome’ of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italy. Le ricerche presentate nel volume sono analisi storiche che non cedono alla narrazione, ma pongono al centro i problemi, i funzionamenti, le dinamiche e i conflitti, allo scopo di comprendere quali tensioni guidassero via via le azioni umane, quali fossero gli obiettivi ma anche le regole del gioco; in altri termini, comprendere come il passato sia davvero per noi una terra straniera, un mondo dove le regole e i comportamenti erano profondamente diversi dai nostri. Porre al centro le azioni significa porre al centro l’uomo, seguire quella che Marc Bloch indicava come la prima vocazione dello storico, quando scriveva che «il buono storico somiglia all’orco della fiaba: là dove fiuta carne umana, là sa che è la sua preda». E per questo “luoghi nella storia” è un’espressione che deve essere presa in tutta la sua pregnanza e in tutta la sua ampiezza, a mostrare la vitalità di un grande tema storiografico. Il volume raccoglie gli interventi al convegno su Marcello Piacentini a cinquant'anni dalla morte. 1881-1960 tenuto a Roma nel dicembre 2010. Si sono attesi i cinquanta anni dalla morte di Marcello Piacentini per organizzare questo convegno. Un tempo lungo che è servito sia a riflettere sulle vicende del fascismo in tutte le sue espressioni – la politica, l'economia, la cultura, le arti, anche lo sport – sia a studiarne i protagonisti. Su Piacentini il giudizio è rimasto sostanzialmente negativo e la ricerca storica, a parte il pregevole libro di Mario Lupano pubblicato nel 1991, si è limitata ad approfondire singoli episodi architettonici o temi particolari. Non si è ancora entrati a fondo nel complesso intreccio che connota, nel corso di oltre cinquanta anni, la sua azione di architetto, urbanista, docente universitario, direttore di riviste, coordinatore di grandi interventi pubblici, scrittore, critico, maestro di giovani architetti. Nel corso del convegno si è indagata la sua dimensione politica e la sua formazione culturale; le sua architetture sono state ricomprese negli aspetti formali e nei risvolti professionali; si è approfondita l'analisi del suo rapporto con gli artisti. Il volume offre più punti di vista e apre a nuove ipotesi di lavoro e prospettive di ricerca. Non è l'opera completa su Piacentini, ma la presentazione del più discusso architetto italiano del Novecento senza rimanere ancorati, per non dire invischiati, a un giudizio politico come unico strumento per valutare la sua opera.

Essa nacque in un clima di contrapposizioni generazionali, con una strategia che aderì senza compromessi a un’idea di modernità, e segnò una temporanea ma sincera alleanza tra due i protagonisti Marcello Piacentini e Giuseppe Pagano, con i quali collaborarono Gio Ponti, Giovanni Michelucci, Pietro Aschieri, Giuseppe Capponi, Gaetano Minnucci. | This contribution proposes the Lectio Magistralis delivered on 21 January 2016 at the inauguration of the Academic Year 2015-2016 at Sapienza University of Rome. The key topic of the inaugural speech was the construction of the University City built during a period of generational conflict and based on a strategy that uncompromisingly espoused the concept of modernity. Its construction also marked a temporary but sincere alliance between the two protagonists, Marcello Piacentini and Giuseppe Pagano and their collaborators Gio Ponti, Giovanni Michelucci, Pietro Aschieri, Giuseppe Capponi and Gaetano Minnucci.
