Une biographie sur Salka Viertel, une actrice juive qui a immigré à Hollywood et qui était connue comme la scénariste de l'actrice suédoise Greta Garbo. En outre, elle avait un salon à Santa Monica, en Californie, où une grande partie des intellectuels européens en exil avait l'habitude de se rendre. Salka était une femme très moderne et intéressante pour l'époque, qui devrait être connue comme elle le mérite. Dans le livre, des sujets tels que la prétendue bisexualité de Salka Viertel et le nombre d'amis connus qu'elle avait, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns, sont abordés : Albert Einstein, Charles Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, F. W. Murnau, Max Reinhardt, Arnold Schönberg, Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Greta Garbo, Montgomery Clift... De plus, comme Gertrude Stein et d'autres femmes célèbres, elle avait son propre salon littéraire qui vit passer des écrivains tels que Truman Capote, Christopher Isherwood, Gore Vidal, etc. Parmi les autres thèmes, citons Berlin dans les années 1920, le passage du muet au parlant, vu depuis Hollywood. Puis la montée d'Hitler et ce qu'elle a signifié pour les juifs ; l'exil des intellectuels qui ne pouvaient pas retourner dans leurs pays respectifs à cause de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Plus tard, la guerre froide et la chasse aux sorcières contre le communisme. La vérité est que le contexte de la vie de Salka Viertel et de son cercle d'amis englobe les grands événements du XXe siècle. Pour ce projet, l'auteur a reçu les bourses du Shanghai Writing Program (Chine, 2016) et du Baltic Centre (Suède, 2017). Edouard Manet (Paris, 1832 – 1883) Manet est l'un des plus célèbres artistes de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, lié aux impressionnistes sans faire vraiment partie de leur groupe. Chérissant son indépendance, il eut une grande influence sur la peinture française, en partie due au choix de ses sujets tirés de la vie quotidienne, de son usage de couleurs pures et de sa technique rapide et libre. C'est son œuvre qui assura la transition entre le réalisme de Courbet et la vision novatrice des impressionnistes. Issu de la grande bourgeoisie, il choisit de devenir peintre après avoir raté son entrée à l'Ecole navale. Il se forma auprès de Thomas Couture, un peintre académique, mais c'est grâce à ses nombreux voyages à travers l'Europe qu'il entreprit dès 1852, qu'il commença à se faire une idée de ce qu'allait être son style propre. Ses premières peintures étaient essentiellement des scènes de genre, inspirées par son amour pour les maîtres espagnols comme Velazquez et Goya, et le portrait. C'est en 1863 qu'il présenta son chef-d'œuvre Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe au Salon des refusés. Son œuvre déclenchant une polémique entre les défenseurs de l'art académique et les jeunes artistes «refusés », il devint le chef de file de cette nouvelle génération d'artistes. A partir de 1864, le salon officiel accepta ses travaux, provoquant toujours de véhémentes protestations comme ce fut le cas avec Olympia en 1865. En 1866, l'écrivain Zola écrivit un article en faveur du travail de Manet. A cette époque, le peintre était ami avec tous les futurs grands maîtres impressionnistes : Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro et Paul Cézanne, qui s'influençaient les uns les autres ; pourtant il restait délibérément à l'extérieur du groupe. En effet, en 1874 il refusa de présenter ses peintures lors de leur première exposition. Sa dernière apparition dans un salon officiel fut en 1882 avec Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère, l'une de ses œuvres les plus connues. Atteint par la gangrène au cours de l'année 1883, il peignit des natures mortes de fleurs jusqu'au moment où il ne s'en sentit plus capable, et il mourut en laissant derrière lui un grand nombre de dessins et de peintures.

Once the State-run Salon in Paris closed, an array of independent Salons mushroomed starting with the French Artists Salon and Women’s Salon in 1881 followed by the Independent Artists’ Salon, National Salon of Fine Arts and Autumn Salon. Offering an unparalleled choice of art identities and alliances, together with undreamed-of opportunities for sales, commissions, prizes and art criticism, these great Salons guaranteed the centripetal and centrifugal power of Paris as the “modern art centre”. Lured by the prospect of being exhibited annually in Salons the size of Biennales today, a huge number and national diversity of artists, from the Australian Rupert Bunny to the Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, flocked to Paris. Yet by no means were these Salons equal in power, nor did they work consensually to forge this “modern art centre”. Formed on the basis of their different cultural politics, constantly they rivalled one another for State acquisitions and commissions, exhibition places and spaces, awards, and every other means of enhancing their legitimacy. By no means were the avant-garde salons those that most succeeded. Instead, as this culturo-political history demonstrates, the French Artists’ and National Fine Art Salons were the most successful, with the genderist French Artists' Salon being the most powerful and “official”. Despite the renown today of Neo-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Fauvism, Cubism and Orphism, the most powerful artists in this “modern art centre” were not Sonia Delaunay, Émile Gallé, Paul Signac, Henri Matisse or even Picasso but such Academicians as Léon Bonnat, William Bouguereau, Fernand Cormon, Edouard Detaille, Gabriel Ferrier, Jean-Paul Laurens, Luc-Oliver Merson and Aimé Morot, who exhibited at the “official” Salon supported by the machinery of the State. In its exposure of the rivalry, conflict and struggle between the Salons and their artists, this is an unprecedented history of dissension. It also exposes how, just below the welcoming internationalist veneer of this “modern art centre”, intense persecutionist paranoia lay festering. Whenever France’s “civilizing mission” seemed culturally, commercially or colonially threatened, it erupted in waves of nationalist xenophobia turning artistic rivalry into bitter enmity. In exposing how rivals became transmuted into conspirators, ultimately this book reveals a paradox resonant in histories that celebrate the international triumph of French modern art: that this magnetic “centre”, which began by welcoming international modernists, ended by attacking them for undermining its cultural supremacy, contaminating its “civilizing mission” and politically persecuting the very modernist culture for which it has received historical renown.
