In this book, readers will learn the most important aspects of what defines a legend, as well as how to tell fact from fiction in these semi-historical tales. Famous legends, such as those of Robin Hood and El Dorado, are presented in abridged versions that help anybody identify what various legends have in common and what is unique to the culture where the tale originated. Contemporary Legend written by Gillian Bennett and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

First published in 1996. For most of the time since the Grimm brothers first contrasted the fairy tale (Märchen) and the legend (Sage), the former has enjoyed the greater reputation among folklorists. Only in recent years, and with the work of such scholars as Gillian Bennett and Paul Smith, has it been recognized that—both as art and as news—the legend is now central to contemporary culture in a way that the Märchen no longer is. The present book is the first collection of essays on legend to appear in English since 1971. Nevertheless, its publication consolidates a gradual shift which has taken place over the last two decades, in which English-language scholarship has taken the lead in the study of certain kinds of legends—variously dubbed modern horror legends, urban legends, urban myths or, here, contemporary legends.

Kamakura Fact Legend written by Iso Mutsu and has been published by Tuttle Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-16 with Travel categories.

Kamakura: Fact and Legend, has long been the definitive work on Kamakura. This classic book is the lifetime achievement of Countess Iso Mutsu (née Gertrude Ethel Passingham), a talented, inquisitive Englishwoman who against all odds married a Japanese diplomat at the turn of the century, and so came to live most of her life in this beautiful city. Iso Mutsu was one of the first to discover that much of the magic of Kamakura today lies in fascinating historical events of the past, among them: the brilliant conquests of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the defiant dance of Shizuka Gozen at Hachiman Shrine, and the amazing rescue of Nichiren at Katase. Her brilliantly crafted accounts of these events, interwoven with walking tours of Kamakura, introduce the city's most important historical sites and explain why they are so famous. Kamakura: Fact and Legend, the only book that Iso Mutsu wrote, is a testament to the devotion with which she succeeded in unlocking Kamakura's secrets for the outside world. The inspiration and reference for later works on Kamakura, this classic volume is both the original and the most in-depth guide to an ancient capital that continues to delight and amaze the traveler.
