One was Latin Christian western Europe. Another was Ottoman Islam. The third, no less vital for so often being overlooked, was east-central Europe: Poland/Lithuania, Livonia, Russia, the freebooting Cossacks, a volatile mix of variations on a general Christian theme. William Urban’s fascinating narrative is an integrated account of early modern war on the ground: of campaigns and battles, soldiers and generals. Temporally it extends from the French invasion of Italy in 1494 to Austria’s Balkan victories culminating in the 1718 Treaty of Peterwardein. Geographically it covers ground from the Low Countries to the depths of the Ukraine. That narrative in turn focuses Urban’s major analytical points: the replacement of “crowd armies” by professionals, and the professionals’ integration into crown armies: government-supervised, bureaucratized institutions. The key to this process was the mercenary. Originally recruited because the obligations of feudal levies were too limited, mercenary forces evolved operationally into skilled users of an increasingly complex gunpowder technology in ever more complex tactical situations. His is the first to examine the weapons technology and armaments industries of the Ottoman Empire, the only Islamic empire that threatened Europe on its own territory in the age of the Gunpowder Revolution. Während über den römischen Legionär oder den preußischen Grenadier Friedrichs des Großen so ziemlich alles Wissenswerte relativ leicht in Erfahrung gebracht werden kann, sei es die Kriegführung im „großen Stil“, also Strategie, Logistik und Finanzierung , oder im „kleinen Stil“ also Kampftaktik , Art der Ausrüstung der einfachen Soldaten, Reichhaltigkeit und Häufigkeit der Verpflegung und die Eintönigkeit des Lagerlebens, so wird man bei der Beantwortung derselben Fragen in Bezug auf das osmanische Heer in arge Schwierigkeiten geraten . Alte europäische Quellen dazu sind meist pro-christlich und übertreiben oft maßlos die Truppenstärke der Osmanen 1 . Außerdem wurden in älteren Werken kaum osmanische Quellen zu Rate gezogen, was sich in einseitigen Analysen niederschlug und somit zu den heute noch gängigen Klischees vom „Gunpowder Empire“ und Horden von religiös fanatischen türkischen Kriegern führte, die nur durch Überzahl und Wildheit gewannen . Die hier verglichenen zwei Bücher versuchen dies zu korrigieren. Das 1988 in Wien erschienene „The Administration of Warfare : Ottoman Military Campaigns In Hungary 1593- 1606“ von Caroline Finkel, versucht erstmals das osmanische Heerwesen in einem klar definierten historischen Kontext , nämlich dem des sogenannten „Langen Krieges“, akkurat zu bewerten. Ihr Buch konzentriert sich ,abgesehen von einem knappen chronologischen Abriß und umfangreichen Kartenmaterial, auf die Logistik, also Organisation der verschiedenen Truppenteile ,deren Versorgung im wesentlichen mit Lebensmitteln und die Finanzierung des Ganzen durch Reich und Sultan. Rhoads Murpheys 1999 in London und New Jersey erschienenes “Ottoman Warfare 1500- 1700” ist schon vom Titel her breiter angelegt. Er beschreibt das osmanische Heerwesen über volle zwei Jahrhunderte in der Hochzeit des Imperiums . Während Finkel meist in der strategischen Ebene verbleibt, untersucht Murphey sehr viel detaillierter die kleinen Dinge, so z.B. die Beschaffungslisten ägyptischer Aghas für eine Strafexpedition in den Jemen...
