Sentinel Chickens written by Peter Doherty and has been published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Beneficial birds categories.

'The idea of 'sentinel chickens' seemed pretty incongruous when I first heard the phrase as a young undergraduate ... The notion of the humble chicken waiting like a trained soldier, alert and focused, for some unseen and approaching enemy just didn't seem likely. Hens en garde!' And yet guard they do. Not only chickens, but puffins, eagles, canaries and toucans- birds of all kinds are recruited by humans to help us interpret changes in our increasingly challenged and unpredictable world. These wonderful creatures continually sample the atmosphere, oceans, fields and forests, signalling toxic and environmental dangers that threaten all vertebrates. Through personal stories and fascinating examples, Nobel prizewinner Peter Doherty shows also how birds have contributed to cutting-edge medical research. Studying birds has helped us to understand the nature of human cancer, malaria and influenza, and contributed to the development of new vaccines and cures. In his trademark style, Peter argues that since birds pollenate, spread plant seeds and control insects, endangering their habitats through human activities is a threat to our own wellbeing. Sentinel Chickens shows why we should give our feathered friends our close, sustained and caring attention.

“A story that’s sure to stick with you for a long time.” —BuzzFeed “More than a coming-of-age novel.” —School Library Journal “[An] inventive, deeply heartfelt love story that explores connections of many kinds.” —Booklist A teen outcast is simultaneously swept up in a whirlwind romance and down a rabbit hole of dark family secrets when another Taiwanese family moves to her small, predominantly white midwestern town in this remarkable novel from the critically acclaimed author of American Panda. Seventeen-year-old Ali Chu knows that as the only Asian person at her school in middle-of-nowhere Indiana, she must be bland as white toast to survive. This means swapping her congee lunch for PB&Js, ignoring the clueless racism from her classmates and teachers, and keeping her mouth shut when people wrongly call her Allie instead of her actual name, pronounced Āh-lěe, after the mountain in Taiwan. Her autopilot existence is disrupted when she finds out that Chase Yu, the new kid in school, is also Taiwanese. Despite some initial resistance due to the “they belong together” whispers, Ali and Chase soon spark a chemistry rooted in competitive martial arts, joking in two languages, and, most importantly, pushing back against the discrimination they face. But when Ali’s mom finds out about the relationship, she forces Ali to end it. As Ali covertly digs into the why behind her mother’s disapproval, she uncovers secrets about her family and Chase that force her to question everything she thought she knew about life, love, and her unknowable future. Snippets of a love story from 19th-century China (a retelling of the Chinese folktale The Butterfly Lovers) are interspersed with Ali’s narrative and intertwined with her fate.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ... THE WAY TO HAPPINESS. "Oh! if I only had your opportunities!" That is what you said yesterday to your friend whose possessions and environment are unlike your own and are what you desire. She is placed so differently from yourself! She can do so much that is impossible for you! And she does not seem to value her possibilities as you would were they yours. With what a deep sigh did you think, " How strangely things are ordered in this world! " and there was the half-acknowledged thought that you could order them a great deal better if you could have your way. True enough. To one who has no insight into "the deep things of God" they seem very strangely ordered. Here is a woman who has money, social position, a beautiful home, and yet is not happy. Here is a man who has gained the worldly success he started early in life to win. His name is a power in the business and financial world, and as he plans many execute. Yet he is not happy. Here and there, all around you, you can put your finger on men and women who, with every facility for happiness, still lack it; whose faces are written over with that handwriting which is Nature's protest and revelation. When you look in their eyes you see haunting shadows, not the clear light which betokens an inward steadily shining sun. Why is this so? you ask. Why, when happiness is so instinctively desired, so universally sought, is it so seldom found? And here we have a world-old riddle, new to each generation of mankind. You want to be happy. You feel that you have a right to happiness. You are also, perhaps, somewhat acquainted with the teachings of the Science of Being which shows you that all good things are yours; and you say, I see, as well as feel, that I am entitled to happiness, and I do...

Our Moral Fate written by Allen Buchanan and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-17 with Philosophy categories.

A provocative and probing argument showing how human beings can for the first time in history take charge of their moral fate. Is tribalism—the political and cultural divisions between Us and Them—an inherent part of our basic moral psychology? Many scientists link tribalism and morality, arguing that the evolved “moral mind” is tribalistic. Any escape from tribalism, according to this thinking, would be partial and fragile, because it goes against the grain of our nature. In this book, Allen Buchanan offers a counterargument: the moral mind is highly flexible, capable of both tribalism and deeply inclusive moralities, depending on the social environment in which the moral mind operates. We can't be morally tribalistic by nature, Buchanan explains, because quite recently there has been a remarkable shift away from tribalism and toward inclusiveness, as growing numbers of people acknowledge that all human beings have equal moral status, and that at least some nonhumans also have moral standing. These are what Buchanan terms the Two Great Expansions of moral regard. And yet, he argues, moral progress is not inevitable but depends partly on whether we have the good fortune to develop as moral agents in a society that provides the right conditions for realizing our moral potential. But morality need not depend on luck. We can take charge of our moral fate by deliberately shaping our social environment—by engaging in scientifically informed “moral institutional design.” For the first time in human history, human beings can determine what sort of morality is predominant in their societies and what kinds of moral agents they are.
