British Pop Art was seen as an integral, even central, part of social change in the Sixties. It was a movement that developed innovative ways of dealing with reality, both reflecting on and participating in the culture. Its aesthetics was often homogeneous with the industrial, with the mass-produced, and, hence, with the artificial, manufactured character of the urban environment. This discontinuity in the traditional approach towards artistic creation furthered the globalization of diversity, which constitutes the abiding concerns of postmodern art. Drawing from postmodern thought and cultural analysis, this book critically examines British Pop Art within the broad interdisciplinary domain of the social and cultural changes that led to flexibility in conceptualization, and provides a contribution to the artistic processes which form and deform the cultural sphere, confirming its relevance to current debates in which questions of postmodern aesthetics prominently figure.

As much as it is an expression of the band's expanding sonic palette, Sell Out also functions as a critique of the rock and roll lifestyle. Not the clichéd mantra of sex, drugs, and rock and roll but in the ways that commercial advertising fabricates a youth-oriented cultural reality by hawking pimple cream, deodorant, food, musical equipment, etc., and linking it with rock and roll. In this sense Sell Out is a reflective work, one that struggles with rock and roll as a cultural expression that aspires to aesthetic permanence while marketed as ephemera. Art and money have much in common. Both are spheres of social activity that carry symbolic values. A coin is simply a piece of metal, stamped with signs to give it symbolic meaning, to give it a value, a value that changes with the vicissitudes of its economic life, or, when no longer legal tender, with its life as a collectable. A painting is a piece of canvas, stretched on a frame to make it taut, which is then covered with pigment, brushed with an image, a sign that gives it value, a value that changes with the vicissitudes of its aesthetic and symbolic life, with its commodity value. Art and money come together whenever the values of both are exchanged within a market—in trade between artist and client/patron, between dealer and customer, between competitors for social authority. These relationships of art and money are examined by a number of writers from a variety of perspectives—from different periods in history, within different cultures, and engaging with different media of art—from Renaissance Italy to Pop Art and the recent flourishing of the art of Australian Aborigines, from critiques of the market and contemporary art to the funding of art education, from an examination of the values that are being bought and sold to ways for artists to avoid an over-engagement with the money economy, and finally the relationship between art, national identity and coinage.
