The concept of predestination has been an essential topic in theology and philosophy since at least the time of St. Augustine, and is notoriously among the most contentious of religious doctrines. Many people of faith have found the belief that God destines them for eternal joy a source of great comfort, but many others have found it deeply troubling. Above all, those who reject predestination have been motivated by concerns about the doctrine's implications for human free will and divine responsibility for evil. Couenhoven addresses these issues by taking up two important questions: “What does predestination actually imply?”, and “How have great theologians defended their doctrines of predestination?” He answers these queries by analyzing why Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and Barth found the doctrine attractive, and explaining the different ways in which they combined belief in predestination, freedom, and God's goodness. The book concludes with a constructive chapter in which Couenhoven defends predestination as a doctrine of hope.

The doctrine of predestination is an important starting point for the study of Christian theology thought from a Reformed theological perspective. This doctrine is essential because it is one of the central themes from the Bible that has been the reason for many debates among many theologians in the history of the church. Despite the different views held by mainline Protestant theologians like Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Jacobus Arminus, this book points to Scripture as the basis for Reformed soteriology. It uses the tools of biblical interpretation to show how the entire Bible addresses the doctrine of predestination so that theology students, pastors, Bible teachers, and anyone interested in Christian theology will better understand predestination from a Reformed perspective toward an effective ministry today.

"In whom we also have been chosen to an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of the One working all things according to the counsel of His will" (Ephesians 1:11) Zanchius (1516-1590) created his age-enduring classic in response to the challenges of those who persisted in charging God with being the Author of sin because He says in the Scriptures that He predestinated all things that come to pass. His answer is irrefutable. The first forty-two pages describes God as He is revealed in His holy Word. He is all-wise and all-powerful. He is perfect and unchangeable. He, being by Himself alone in eternity, determined to create a universe, and to people that universe with being of His own choice. He saw in His mind the entire course of events, and the persons who would act out these events, and having all things completely settled in His mind beforehand, He decreed all things that were to occur. The distinctions thus having been established in His own mind, He at one time, in one act of His will, predestinated all things "according to the counsel of His will." The author then takes up the subject of predestination. The word means to 'deliberate beforehand with ones' self how one shall act; and in consequence of such deliberation to constitute, fore-ordain, and predetermine where and when, how and by whom anything shall be done, and to what end it shall be done. Who else but God is able to both conceive and order all the happenings in time and eternity? This book is not only closely reasoned, but it is backed and proven by Scripture throughout. It is made abundantly clear that men may not absolve themselves of evil because of God=s eternal predestination of allthings. God leaves all men with a freedom to will, but in their total depravity all choose to will only what is evil in the eyes of God. For, "God is not tempted by evils, and He tempts no one. But each one is tempted by his own lusts, having been drawn out and havin

The topic of predestination has challenged Christians for hundreds of years. Consider the exchanges between Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther in the 15th century and between John Wesley and George Whitefield in the 18th century. At the risk of oversimplifying today's landscape, I will refer to those who believe man has a free will to accept or reject the Gospel of Christ through faith as Arminians, and I will refer to those who believe man's will and salvation are in the hands of God as Calvinists. Another way to state this is that Arminians believe in conditional election and Calvinists believe in unconditional election. This book surveys Scripture relating to predestination from the Arminian and Calvinist viewpoints. The argument is made that the Calvinist position is the Scriptural one.

A concise, plain language treatment of the Biblical accuracy of the Calvinistic doctrine of predestination. Predestination: TBTS delves far beyond the 'normal' verses used by Calvinism to support the belief that God chose individuals for salvation before we were even created, and expands the scope of the study to include Scripture that might otherwise seem completely unrelated. The book does not seek to disprove the doctrine of predestination, but instead, uses a wealth of Scripture to clarify what has been one of the most hotly debated topics in Christianity for hundreds of years. This being that, according to Calvinism, predestination is extended by God to man, and that all anyone can ever do to be saved is to hope that they are 'chosen' by God. Predestination: TBTS, however, shows how Scripture clearly reveals that this teaching is in error, and that the totality of the Scriptures themselves reveal a completely different take on this doctrine. This take is neither new, nor is it earth-shattering, it is simply what the Bible has been saying for two centuries concerning the doctrine of predestination. Namely, that predestination is solely, and exclusively the possession of Jesus Christ, and that the only way any person can ever claim to be predestined, chosen, or elect is through Christ, and Him alone. While some within Calvinism might not dispute this claim, its (Calvinism's) teaching of the doctrine wrongly attributes this choosing of individuals before time began to God the Father, which is directly disputed by this work. What Predestination: TBTS shows is that, instead, God the Father chose, or predestined, His Son, Jesus Christ, alone, and that His (Jesus Christ's) predestination is available to any, and all, who will only believe in Him.

The Reformed doctrine of predestination has been coming under fire a lot in recent days especially among open theists that question God's sovereignty in the face of evil. Although this book was written many years ago, it still helps to shed light on the true roots of the doctrine and the philosophical and Biblical answers it offers. The doctrine deserves a proper treatment and this work is an attempt at that justification and a look at its history.

The world is so wonderfully designed. Only by blatant dishonesty can anyone doubt there must be a designer:- God. There is nothing manufactured without purpose. God claims responsibility for all creation, and has a purpose and predetermined plan for all. Nothing happens on Earth without the permissive will of God. None of us chose to be born. God decided who should be born, where and how long one can live, at the end of which is judgment. The mysteries of life are resolved through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the only prescribed way. Avoid religion, a man-made deception agent.
