Różnorodność gatunkowa i tematyczna filmów Romana Polańskiego sprawiała wiele problemów obserwatorom jego twórczości. Czy można mówić o jednolitym stylu reżysera „Noża w wodzie”, „Dziecka Rosemary”, „Tragedii Makbeta”, „Piratów” czy „Gorzkich godów”? „Pianista” stanowi bardzo ciekawy element tej urozmaiconej układanki. Film sumuje zarówno doświadczenia życiowe, jak i artystyczne Polańskiego. Jest doskonałym przykładem połączenia dwóch obsesji człowieka i reżysera: obsesji prawdy i obsesji formy. Z fanatycznym zacięciem Polański dbał o odtworzenie zgodnych z prawdą historyczną szczegółów scenografii, rekwizytów, strojów, ale też o oddanie klimatu i przeżyć bohaterów. Podobnie postępował w przypadku innych swoich realistycznych filmów, jak „Chinatown” czy „Tess”. Martin Shaw, odtwórca roli Banka w „Tragedii Makbeta” przytacza ciekawą anegdotę z czasów swojej współpracy z polskim reżyserem. „Jest on mistrzem w wychwytywaniu niezauważalnych wprost detali. Kiedyś zobaczyłem go, jak w furii darł na strzępy kostium, bo okazało się, że został uszyty na maszynie. „Co się z wami, kurwa, dzieje, ludzie?! Przecież jest, kurwa, rok 1076!!! Ile było wtedy maszyn do szycia?” Równie ważna jak prawda materialna jest dla Polańskiego prawda psychologiczna przedstawianych postaci, zgodna z JEGO wiedzą i wizją świata. Wiedzę tę kształtowały dramatyczne wydarzenia dzieciństwa i późniejsze niezwykłe losy. Spotykał ludzi sprowadzonych do poziomu „ssaków”, o których opowiadał jeden z jego pierwszych filmów krótkometrażowych. Dziwni ludzie w ab-surdalnym świecie, groźni dla siebie i innych. I takich właśnie bohaterów widzimy zarówno w „Nożu w wodzie”, „Dziecku Rosemary”, „Makbecie”, „Lokatorze”, „Tess”, „Piratach”, czy w „Pianiście”. Wszystkie najbardziej nawet odmienne od siebie filmy Polańskiego łączy też fanatyczna wręcz dbałość o artystyczną formę: kompozycję kadru, dozowanie napięcia, perfekcyjne łączenie obrazów i muzyki. Ta obsesja formy sprawiała, że reżyser powtarzał w nieskończoność poszczególne sceny na planie i wiele czasu spędzał przy stole montażowym. Dzięki temu osiągnął owe „niewidzialne mistrzostwo”, o którym mówiono przy okazji „Pianisty”; niezauważalne może dla przeciętnych widzów, ale oczywiste dla mistrzów rzemiosła filmowego, amerykańskich akademików, którzy Polańskiemu przyznali Oscara. Pełne panowanie nad formą filmów umożliwiło reżyserowi doświadczenie aktorskie, a także umiejętności plastyczne. Niewielu jego kolegów po fachu potrafi dokładnie zmaterializować na papierze swoje fantazje, narysować elementy scenografii, czy też potem odegrać przed aktorami przypisane im role. W dodatku Polański jest wrażliwy na muzykę i dlatego ścieżki dźwiękowe jego filmów należą do najciekawszych w kinie światowym. Rewelacyjne efekty akustyczne już w jego wczesnym „Wstręcie” nie powstały przypadkowo. Reżyser pisał w autobiografii: „Zgranie dźwięku. To jedna z najbardziej żmudnych faz przy realizacji filmu, wymagająca niezwykłego opanowania (...) We ‘Wstręcie’ dźwięk odgrywa kluczową rolę. W miarę nasilania się urojeń, zmysły Carol stopniowo wyostrzają się, dźwięki docierają do niej z coraz większym natężeniem – kapiące krany, śmiech bawiących się w przyklasztornym ogrodzie zakonnic, itd.” *** „Pianista” sumuje osiągnięcia twórcze Polańskiego, wyznacza czołowe miejsce reżysera w świecie współczesnej sztuki, a jednocześnie sumuje też dokonania ambitnego kina; tego, które szuka prawdy o człowieku, jego wielkości i małości, zarówno w czasach Makbeta, jak i w naszej epoce.
