Portraiture is a demanding art requiring the artist to capture a likeness and render it revealing some hint of the personality behind the image. A two-pronged task, it requires great technical skill and an intuitive eye. In both these respects, John Singer Sargent stands out as a portrait artist of major stature. Born in 1856 in Florence of American parents, Sargent showed artistic aptitude at an early age and was enrolled at the Academia delle Belle Arti in that city. Later he studied with Parisian artist Carolus Duran, acquiring the loose, painterly style for which he is renowned. International acclaim as a portrait artist came early in his life and followed him throughout his career. Sargent's portraits done in oil are well known; they appear in major museums throughout the world. A lesser-known but no less respected aspect of his oeuvre, his portrait drawings are the focus of this collection. Included here are early works in pencil and pastels, and later renderings in charcoal, a medium Sargent favored after 1910. They have been selected from both public and private collections by art historian Trevor J. Fairbrother and attest to Sargent's technical skill, versatility, and dexterity in three different mediums. In addition, these works reveal Sargent's ability to treat a diverse group of subjects; he handles the languorous beauties of the Edwardian age, members of the aristocracy, and the great literary and artistic figures of his day with equal virtuosity, capturing their characteristic mood and style. John Singer Sargent was an American leading portrait painter of Edwardian era luxury. During his career, he created about 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. In 1907, at the age of fifty-one, Sargent officially closed his studio and focused on landscapes in his later years. After 1917, most critics began to consign him to the masters of the past, "a brilliant ambassador between his patrons and posterity." Modernists treated him more harshly, considering him completely out of touch with the reality of American life and with emerging artistic trends including Cubism and Futurism. Sargent quietly accepted the criticism, but refused to alter his negative opinions of modern art. He retorted, "Ingres, Raphael and El Greco, these are now my admiration, these are what I like."

The official biography of John Singer Sargent This book is the official biography of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), published two years after his death in 1927, by his friend the Hon. Evan Charteris. John Sargent was the leading portrait painter of his generation, famous for his portrayal of Edwardian era high society. He was born in Florence to American parents and remained throughout his life an expatriate artist, travailing throughout Europe and eventually settling at his London studio at 31, Tite Street. In later life he retired from portraiture to complete public murals in America. This book documents Sargent's journey, starting as shy, rambunctious child more interested in the outdoors than schooling, and with a natural talent for drawing. His mother Mrs. Sargent, with her insatiable love of travel, was convinced that traveling around Europe was a satisfactory alternative to formal education for the young artist. In Mürren, among the Swiss mountains, he received his first lessons on how to draw a head from Mr. Joseph Farquharson. In Rome, at age thirteen, he studied watercolor under the guidance of the German-American landscape painter Carl Welsch. At age eighteen he began his formal art training at the atelier of Carolus-Duran, then the most popular portrait painter in Paris, and was soon after admitted to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. His talent was immediately celebrated by the public, and after a brief scandal involving his now infamous portrait of Madame X, he enjoyed a successful carrier as the leading painter of his era. Sargent was a member of many art and literary circles of his time and was especially fond of great writers. The book discusses his friendship with literary stars such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry James, Edmund Gosse, and includes an essay on Sargent as a youth by Vernon Lee, his childhood friend that remained close all his life. The book also discusses his friendship to fellow painters, and includes his letters to and from his friend and mentor, Claude Monet. Also addressed is Sargent's opinion of growing new movements in modern art, including a letter in which he discusses Paul Cézanne. Although Sargent expressed distaste for these new rebels, they undoubtedly influenced his later work. The book includes 50 illustrations as well as a catalogue raisonné. The Hon. Sir Evan Edward Charteris, K. C. (1864-1940) was an English biographer and art administrator. He was chairman of the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in 1928 and chairman of the Tate Gallery Board in 1934. He was also a Trustee of the National Gallery and the Wallace Collection.

Many of the sitters in this collection were John Singer Sargents close friends. They are posed informally, sometimes in the act of painting or singing, and it is evident from the bold way they confront us that they are personalities of a creative stamp. Brilliant as these pictures are as works of art and penetrating studies of character, they are also records of relationships, allegiances, influences and aspirations. This volume, and the exhibition it accompanies, aims to explore these friendships in depth and draw out their significance in the story of Sargents life and the development of his art. The book is structured chronologically, with sections arranged according to the places Sargent worked and formed relationships during his cosmopolitan career: Paris, London, New York, Italy and the Alps. The cast of characters includes famous names, among them Gabriel Fauré and Auguste Rodin, Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry James. But the authors also make their point with images of Sargents familiars, such as the artists Jane and Wilfrid de Glehn who accompanied him on his sketching expeditions to the Continent, and the Italian painter Ambrogio Raffele, a recurrent model in his Alpine studies. In such paintings Sargent explored the making of art (his own included) and the relationship of the artist to the natural world. These are examples of an absorbing range of images and personalities, all distinguished in one way or another for their artistry, and all linked by friendship and a shared aesthetic to the central figure of Sargent himself.
