"The Chinese Rites Controversy is often mentioned in Church history and the Jesuits' method of accommodation has often been praised by missionaries who seek to the bridge the divide between Western Christianity and a local culture. But is the Chinese Rites Controversy just an event in the past? Is the Rites Controversy still significant today? What is the relevance of such a topic in understanding the identity of the Church in the modern world? The significance of the controversy seems to have waned over time, but the Church still has much to learn from this age-old debate. It is significant in that the Jesuits, specifically Matteo Ricci, who prompted this controversy reveal many of the underlying questions the Church is still asking itself today. Although Matteo Ricci himself was not a direct participant in the Chinese Rites Controversy, he is most often identified as a leading figure in the debate. Highlighting a controversy that seems obsolete today can provide ways of navigating the current debates found in the modern-day Church. The tensions found in the Rites Controversy involved many different factors, but many of these issues pertained to ecclesiology and mission. Often the explicit questions and issues that the Jesuits and the Church as a whole were addressing then are the implicit questions we are asking ourselves today in regard to ecclesiology and missiology. What is the overall mission of the universal and local church? What form should a contextualized Christianity take within a different culture? How do we gauge whether the Gospel message has been compromised? What does an ecclesiology look like that is attuned to the local culture? Who has authority to make decisions regarding ecclesial issues at the local level? Erik Zurcher sums up these questions succinctly by stating that the Rites Controversy is relevant theologically in that it asks the questions: "To what extent is it possible to disengage the basic message of Christianity from its European post-Renaissance shell to adopt it to the thought patterns, norms, and rituals, of other cultures without losing its identity? And what can the study of late Ming and early Qing Jesuit effort to contribute to answering that question?" These questions will be important to keep in mind throughout the paper when trying to understand the Chinese Rites Controversy. These very modern day questions guide this analysis of the Rites Controversy. Although these questions will not be answered in full necessarily, they provide a general framework for the thesis. Therefore, I argue that Matteo Ricci's use of the accommodation method and the controversy it provoked in regard to the Chinese Rites provides a larger vision for how the Church can move forward as a global Church and living out a contextualized mission."--Introduction.

A Question Of Rites written by J. S. Cummins and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with History categories.

There were wide repercussions: politics, national and ecclesiastical, even the history of science were involved. Professor Cummins retells the story from a deliberately 'dissident' viewpoint. Till now the account has been largely that of the Jesuits; his focus is the Spanish Dominican, Domingo Navarrete (1618-86), who emerged as the spokesman for the friars' cause. Not a scholar or scientist of the calibre of Matteo Ricci or other Jesuit 'geometers' in Peking, Navarrete nonetheless fully merits attention as a perceptive and frank observer of a passionate and complex scene. His major work, the Tratados, was widely read, admired by the likes of Quesnay and Locke, and served as a key source of European knowledge about China. The first chapters of the present book set out the background: the rise of the Dominicans and the Jesuits, their differing philosophies, and their conflicts in Europe and America.

Meaning And Controversy Within Chinese Ancestor Religion written by Paulin Batairwa Kubuya and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-25 with Religion categories.

Chinese practices related to ancestors have long been the subject of conflicting interpretations. These practices are rooted in the lived experience of practitioners, and therefore need to be considered as embodied expressions of the quest for existential meaning. For practitioners, the achievement of existential meaning requires the inclusion, implication, and mediation of the ancestors. When gestures in ancestor rites are analyzed from this perspective it is possible to appreciate their essence as constitutive of “ancestor religion.” This book uses an inquisitive method that investigates the discrepancies between foreign and local explanations, and proposes another hermeneutic framework for ancestor related praxes.
