In search of a missing treasure, Da Silva returns to an old case Off the island of Barbados, the crew of a Brazilian ocean liner strains to hear the sounds of Carnival coming from shore. A small boat pulls alongside, and a band of steel drummers offer to play for them. As they make their rounds on the ship, the bandleader slips away. He pistol whips one of the crew, forcing him to open the ship’s safe, and escapes before the song has ended, taking half a million dollars in gems with him. The Brazilian police send young detective José Da Silva to investigate the robbery. He captures the thieves but never recovers the jewels. Fifteen years later, three of the gang’s members have died in prison, and the fourth is due for release. Da Silva follows him back to Barbados, hoping the thief will lead him to the long-forgotten treasure—and a final solution to the case that started his career.

'Mr. Duguid's account of his journey through the Bolivian Chaco is the work of a man who has that rare combination of gifts - a capacity for adventure, and a sensitiveness and imagination that are equal to the occasion when he comes to write. Mr. Duguid's prose admirably renders the brute, physical aspect of the scene so that it seems present in all its overpowering gaudiness to the senses, as one reads.' The origins of literature’s finest crime fighters, told by their creators themselves Their names ring out like gunshots in the dark of a back alley, crime fighters of a lost era whose heroic deeds will never be forgotten. They are men like Lew Archer, Pierre Chambrun, Flash Casey, and the Shadow. They are women like Mrs. North and the immortal Nancy Drew. These are detectives, and they are some of the only true heroes the twentieth century ever knew. In this classic volume, Otto Penzler presents essays written by the authors who created these famous characters. We learn how Ed McBain killed—and resurrected—the hero of the 87th Precinct, how international agent Quiller wrote his will, and how Dick Tracy first announced that “crime does not pay.” Some of these heroes may be more famous than others, but there is not one whom you wouldn’t like on your side in a courtroom, a shootout, or an old-fashioned barroom brawl.

For years, she’s made his life hell, but poor old Charley has always been too meek to stand up for himself. One night they have a terrible fight, loud enough for Mrs. Williams next door to hear every word, and the argument is followed by eerie silence. The next thing Mrs. Williams knows, Charley is digging up the peach tree in his backyard and burying it again. When Mrs. Crompton doesn’t reappear, Mrs. Williams has only one thought on her mind: Mrs. Crompton has been murdered. When the local sheriff knocks on the Cromptons’ door, Charley answers holding a bloody ax. As the circumstantial evidence piles up, the police are forced to decide: Is Charley Crompton a cold-blooded killer? Or has he simply lost his mind?
