This book reveals the sinister true story of the Mafia in Hollywood. Crammed with legends, myths, murders, madness, mayhem, superstar tantrums, super-sexed starlets, power brokers and politics, it is an ambitious account of Hollywood’s hidden history, from the rogue cops who took on the Mob on the streets of Los Angeles to the stars who became stars because Mafia Godfathers said they would. In The Dark Heart of Hollywood, seasoned crime and entertainment writer Douglas Thompson reveals how all is masterminded by the money-obsessed Mafia, for whom everything and everyone is simply a commodity. The intense saga charges across America: from Hollywood bedrooms to the Oval Office, from California’s twenty-first century computer capital to the cocaine-connection HQs stretching from the Sunset Strip to Marseilles, Milan, Moscow, Tokyo and Beijing. In this magnificent and highly compelling volume, Hollywood is unveiled as Tinseltown without the tinsel.

A study of an important but neglected director that “fills many gaps and updates our knowledge of a major filmmaker of the silent period and beyond” (Positif). The profusion of research on film history means that there are now few Hollywood filmmakers in the category of Neglected Master, but John M. Stahl has been stuck in it for far too long. His strong association with melodrama and the “woman’s film” is a key to this neglect; those mainstays of popular cinema are no longer the object of critical scorn or indifference, but Stahl has until now hardly benefited from this welcome change in attitude. His remarkable silent melodramas were either lost or buried in archives, while his major sound films such as Imitation of Life and Magnificent Obsession, equally successful in their time, have been overshadowed by the glamour of the 1950s remakes by Douglas Sirk. Sirk is a far from neglected figure; Stahl’s much longer Hollywood career deserves attention and celebration in its own right, as this book definitively shows. Drawing on a wide range of film and document archives, scholars from three continents come together to cover Stahl’s work, as director and also producer, from its beginnings during World War I to his death, as a still active filmmaker, in 1950. Between them they make a strong case for Stahl as an important figure in cinema history, and as author of many films that still have the power to move their audiences.

"Listen and attend with the ear of your heart." - Saint Benedict. Dolores Hart stunned Hollywood in 1963, when after ten highly successful feature films, she chose to enter a contemplative monastery. Now, fifty years later, Mother Dolores gives this fascinating account of her life, with co-author and life-long friend, Richard DeNeut. Dolores was a bright and beautiful college student when she made her film debut with Elvis Presley in Paramount's 1957 Loving You. She acted in nine more movies with other big stars such as Montgomery Clift, Anthony Quinn and Myrna Loy. She also gave a Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway play The Pleasure of His Company and appeared in television shows, including The Virginian and Playhouse 90. An important chapter in her life occurred while playing Saint Clare in the movie Francis of Assisi, which was filmed on location in Italy. Born Dolores Hicks to a complicated and colorful Chicago family, Mother Dolores has travelled a charmed yet challenging road in her journey toward God, serenity and, yes, love. She entered the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut, at the peak of her career, not in order to leave the glamorous world of acting she had dreamed of since childhood, but in order to answer a mysterious call she heard with the "ear of the heart". While contracted for another film and engaged to be married, she abandoned everything to become a bride of Christ.

Joe Sutton was a successful public relations man to stars, then artists' manager. The first professional feather in his cap was convincing a young songwriter to perform. Doubting if anyone would want to hear him sing, Neil Diamond nonetheless took Sutton's advice, and the rest, as they say, is history. Eventually, Sutton's world began crashing in around him. Surrounded by past successes and the promise of yet more, he found himself in a deep depression. Therapists and medication helped somewhat, along with support from his family and friends. What eventually pulled Joe out of his doldrums was Vipassana meditation. He began to reevaluate his life, learning to appreciate the people around him, and to recognize just how blessed he really was. He gave up his business and began to write, realizing the link between Joe Sutton, the LA Fairfax High School football star and Joseph Michael Sutton, self-actualized Hollywood success story. Cary Grant once saw him with his two sons, and remarked, "I think you're the luckiest man I've ever seen." After a lifetime of experience, Joe Sutton has come to agree with him.
