Three ordinary women. One extraordinary proposition. Best friends Evie, Krista and Willow are just trying to make it through New York life. They're regular girls with typical crises: making it up the corporate ladder, making sense of dating and making rent. Until they discover Pretty, a magic tincture that makes them, well ... gorgeous. With a single drop, each young woman gets the gift of jaw-dropping beauty for one week. Who can blame them for exploiting this gift as unexpected opportunities begin to present themselves? But there is a dark side too. As the gloss starts to fade for these modern-day Cinderellas there's just one question left: what have they sacrificed to be Pretty?

A bartender-photographer trains her eye on the patrons at McGlinchey's bar It's four o'clock in the afternoon and the regulars start to file into the perpetual twilight of a downtown bar in Philadelphia. Bartender Sarah Stolfa pours out the drinks then picks up her camera. McGlinchey's is a haven for drinkers from all walks of life: You'll meet the rebellious college student with pink-streaked hair and a bottle of hangover-inducing brew; the sharply dressed businessman with a yearning look; the pensive loner carefully ignoring his newspaper and bag of chips; and the former prom king with his tie and V-neck sweater, double fisting a shot and a beer. The urban bar experience is brought to life in these pages, topped off with an introduction written by best-selling author Jonathan Franzen and Stolfa's own meditations on finding her inspiration while tending bar. For young hipsters, grizzled old-timers, and everyone in between, The Regulars is as elegant as an Old Master painting and as down-home as a bottle of Bud.

A fierce, feisty, and wonderfully entertaining (Scott Westerfeld, author of "Uglies") debut with a magical twist about three ordinary, regular girls who suddenly have their fantasies come true or do they? Best friends Evie, Krista, and Willow are just trying to make it through their mid-twenties in New York. They re regular girls, with average looks and typical quarter-life crises: making it up the corporate ladder, making sense of online dating, and making rent. Until they come across Pretty, a magic tincture that makes them, well...gorgeous. Like, supermodel gorgeous. And it s certainly not "their "fault if the sudden gift of beauty causes unexpected doors to open for them. But there s a dark side to Pretty, too, and as the gloss fades for these modern-day Cinderellas, there s just one question left: "What would you sacrifice to be Pretty?" Wildly irreverent, blatantly sexy, and observed with pitch-perfect wit, "The Regulars" is fresh compulsive reading from a bright new voice (Brenda Bowen, author of "Enchanted August") in fiction, perfect for fans of Jennifer Close and Kevin Kwan."

In 1898 the American Regular Army was a small frontier constabulary engaged in skirmishes with Indians and protesting workers. Forty-three years later, in 1941, it was a large modern army ready to wage global war against the Germans and the Japanese. In this definitive social history of America's standing army, military historian Edward Coffman tells how that critical transformation was accomplished. Coffman has spent years immersed in the official records, personal papers, memoirs, and biographies of regular army men, including such famous leaders as George Marshall, George Patton, and Douglas MacArthur. He weaves their stories, and those of others he has interviewed, into the story of an army which grew from a small community of posts in China and the Philippines to a highly effective mechanized ground and air force. During these years, the U.S. Army conquered and controlled a colonial empire, military staff lived in exotic locales with their families, and soldiers engaged in combat in Cuba and the Pacific. In the twentieth century, the United States entered into alliances to fight the German army in World War I, and then again to meet the challenge of the Axis Powers in World War II. Coffman explains how a managerial revolution in the early 1900s provided the organizational framework and educational foundation for change, and how the combination of inspired leadership, technological advances, and a supportive society made it successful. In a stirring account of all aspects of garrison life, including race relations, we meet the men and women who helped reconfigure America's frontier army into a modern global force.

Guy is convinced that the man and woman with whom he has lived all his life cannot possibly be what they claim to be--his parents. They're too weird! Would anyone else's mother tie-dye every pair of underwear in the house? Would anyone else's father perform the famous oyster trick by sucking an oyster up his nose with a horrible noise and spitting it out of his mouth--in a restaurant? No--except maybe the parents of the weirdest, craziest, most unappealing kid in Guy's whole class, Bob-o. But Bob-o's parents are as normal as parents come--just like Guy. This gives Guy food for thought, especially when he finds out that he and Bob-o have the same birthday, and were born in the same hospital! Guy and his best friend Buzz are determined to find out the truth about what really took place the day Guy and Bob-o were born. Readers will delight in Weeks's humorous yet sensitive handling of this classic adolescent phase--the search for identity. 00-01 Texas Bluebonnet Award Masterlist

From Chapter 1: Ten years ago, I was a psychoanalyst in a beautiful coastal community. Often, I was struck by an awareness of the abyss between the beauty of my surroundings and the gulag of my interior world. How I became aware of these feelings, why they were such important signals, and what they ultimately revealed to me provided the genesis for this book. There were a multitude of personal questions as to why I had these feelings. What was my cultural context as I practiced and lived? My subjective experience as a psychoanalyst in this gulag? The Siberia-like experience did not have much in common with life by the sea. But then, one part of psychoanalysis is about what is beneath that surface. ----- Science or fiction, poetry or facts? It is all this. With Christina Griffin we embark on the atmosphere of a historic migration trail departing from a tiny geographical place in central Europe which leads us over the Ocean. It is the journey of a conquest of the north-atlantic world by the 20th century's Budapest culture - intertwined with Psychoanalysis in an embrace, bringing innovative ideas and different sensibilities to the New Continent. Among them: love, closeness, understanding and tolerance as a message. This volume lets you feel the atmosphere of a fairytale which could become reality. Andre E. Haynal, M.D.,

The Face on the Milk Carton meets The Impossible Knife of Memory in this ripped-from-the-headlines novel that explores the power of being an ally—and a friend—when a kidnapped boy returns to his hometown. Sam Walsh had been missing for three years. His older sister, Beth, thought he was dead. His childhood friend Josh thought it was all his fault. They were the last two people to see him alive. Until now. Because Sam has been found, and he’s coming home. Beth desperately wants to understand what happened to her brother, but her family refuses to talk about it—even though Sam is clearly still affected by the abuse he faced at the hands of his captor. And as Sam starts to confide in Josh about his past, Josh can’t admit the truths he’s hidden deep within himself: that he’s gay, and developing feelings for Sam. And, even bigger: that he never told the police everything he saw the day Sam disappeared. As Beth and Josh struggle with their own issues, their friends and neighbors slowly turn on Sam, until one night when everything explodes. Beth can’t live in silence. Josh can’t live with his secrets. And Sam can’t continue on until the whole truth of what happened to him is out in the open. For fans of thought-provoking stories like The Face on the Milk Carton, this is a book about learning to be an ally—even when the community around you doesn’t want you to be.
