The Syrian civil war has allowed al-Qaeda to recover from its setbacks up to 2010. Its main affiliate in the region seems to be testing a new strategy of collaboration with other Salafist-Jihadist groups and a less brutal implementation of Sharia law in areas it controls. In combination, this might allow the Al Nusrah Front to carve out the sort of territorial control of a region (or state) that al-Qaeda has sought ever since its eviction from Afghanistan. On the other hand, Syria has also seen a civil war between two al-Qaeda inspired factions (Al Nusrah and the Iraq based Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [ISIS]) and indicates there are limits to its ability to cooperate with other anti-Assad factions and gain popular appeal. The extent that the Syrian civil war offers the means for al-Qaeda to recover from its earlier defeats will determine whether the organization has a future, or if it will become simply an ideology and label adopted by various Islamist movements fighting their own separate struggles.

This report provides information known by the end of 2011 about the Islamic State’s origins, finances, organization, methods of establishing territorial control, and response to airpower. Countering the Islamic State can rely, in part, on the great deal of accumulated knowledge available. Iraqis and coalition forces routed the group once, and this history can inform the components of another successful strategy to defeat the Islamic State.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq, now known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS, is growing steadily in size, power, and influence, as its militant ranks have blossomed. In the summer of 2013, ISIS carried out attacks on two different prisons in Iraq, and in those attacks freed hundreds of experienced al-Qaeda fighters and leaders. The group is now able to carry out approximately 40 mass casualty attacks every month. Multiple car bombings struck the capital this morning. The nearly 9,000 deaths in Iraq last year made it the bloodiest since U.S. forces departed in 2011. The civil war in neighboring Syria only further strengthens this group. Militants are able to flow freely between Iraq and Syria, providing ISIS an advantage as it works to advance its regional vision of a radical Islamist state.

Looking to the future in confronting the Islamic State The Islamic State (best known in the West as ISIS or ISIL) has been active for less than a decade, but it has already been the subject of numerous histories and academic studies—all focus primarily on the past. The Future of ISIS is the first major study to look ahead: what are the prospects for the Islamic State in the near term, and what can the global community, including the United States, do to counter it? Edited by two distinguished scholars at Indiana University, the book examines how ISIS will affect not only the Middle East but the global order. Specific chapters deal with such questions as whether and how ISIS benefitted from intelligence failures, and what can be done to correct any such failures; how to confront the alarmingly broad appeal of Islamic State ideology; the role of local and regional actors in confronting ISIS; and determining U.S. interests in preventing ISIS from gaining influence and controlling territory. Given the urgency of the topic, The Future of ISIS is of interest to policymakers, analysts, and students of international affairs and public policy.

The al-Qaeda Organization (AQO) and the Islamic State Organization (ISO) are transnational adversaries that conduct terrorism in the name of Sunni Islam. It is declared U.S. Government (USG) policy to degrade, defeat, and destroy them. The present book has been written to assist policymakers, military planners, strategists, and professional military educators whose mission demands a deep understanding of strategically-relevant differences between these two transnational terrorist entities. In it, one shall find a careful comparative analysis across three key strategically relevant dimensions: essential doctrine, beliefs, and worldview; strategic concept, including terrorist modus operandi; and specific implications and recommendations for current USG policy and strategy. Key questions that are addressed include: How is each terrorist entity related historically and doctrinally to the broader phenomenon of transnational Sunni "jihadism"? What is the exact nature of the ISO? How, if at all, does ISO differ in strategically relevant ways from AQO? What doctrinal differences essentially define these entities? How does each understand and operationalize strategy? What critical requirements and vulnerabilities characterize each entity? Finally, what implications, recommendations, and proposals are advanced that are of particular interest to USG strategists and professional military educators? This book may appeal to military planners, policymakers and analysts, strategists, political scientists, broadcast reporters, homeland security and intelligence community analysts, and professional military educators whose mission demands on a deep understanding of the strategically relevant differences between two transnational terrorist entities, the Al-Qaeda Organization and the Islamic State Organization (IS).Broadcast news media and students pursuing coursework and research assignments relating to the Islamic State and/or the Al-Qaeda organizations and their doctrines for terrorism may be interested in this text for military science, defense policy, political science, and homeland security classes. Security Issues In The Greater Middle East written by Karl Yambert and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-09 with Political Science categories.

This textbook anthology of selected readings on pressing Middle East security concerns serves as an invaluable single-volume assessment of critical security issues in nations such as Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. The issues and current events of the Greater Middle East continue to hold deep implications for American geopolitical interests in the region—as they have for many decades. An ideal resource for students in undergraduate courses on the Middle East and related regions as well as students in graduate programs of international studies or security studies, this textbook anthologizes recent, insightful analyses by top scholars on trends and events in the Middle East that bear crucially on regional and global security considerations, covering topics like Iran's nuclear ambitions; the rise, ebb, and resurgence of Al Qaeda; and the war in Syria. The essays address concerns that include the re-imposition of military rule in Egypt; the current status of Palestinian-Israeli relations; the civil war and proposed chemical inspections in Syria; Sunni-Shiite conflict and the revitalized al Qaeda presence in Iraq and the Sunni resurgence in Iraq and Syria; and the on-again-off-again international monitoring of nuclear facilities in Iran, along with discussions of that country's connections to the Syrian regime and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The use of drone strikes as antiterrorist weapons and their use within U.S. and international law also receive specific attention. Each reading is summarized and contextualized by a concise introduction that serves to enhance the integration of the individual readings across the book. Original source notes are included with each chapter as guides to further reading, and numerous maps provide an essential sense of place. The book also includes a glossary of terms and a register of brief biographies of significant persons.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the name given by U.S. Central Command to the ongoing U.S. military operations in Iraq and Syria against ISIS/ISIL, also known as the Islamic State. This unique, fully updated guide documents all aspects of this operation with comprehensive and authoritative information from renowned experts and government sources. The Islamic State is variously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), AQI, and Daesh. The group - headed by terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - is seizing substantial territory in Iraq as it attempts to fulfill its ambition of forming the first terrorist Islamic state. Terrorism experts are concerned that the group will pose a serious threat to American interests and security. On September 10, President Obama addressed the American public and announced what amounts to an ongoing war against ISIL. The efforts of the Department of Defense and State Department to implement the new policy is fully documented in this unique compendium, along with incisive commentary during House and Senate congressional hearings. There is also substantial information and commentary about the crisis in Syria, Iran's influence on Iraq, Turkish influence in the Levant, intelligence assessments, histories of the Iraq conflict and politics, and much more about this critical issue. The War Against the Islamic State - Operation Inherent Resolve: Targeted Operations Against ISIL Terrorists * House Armed Services Committee Hearing on the Administration's Strategy for ISIL * ISIL's Reign of Terror: Confronting the Growing Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq and Syria * Next Steps for U.S. Foreign Policy on Syria and Iraq * ISIS and the Threat from Foreign Fighters * Terrorist Financing and the Islamic State * Administration's Strategy and Military Campaign against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) * Countering ISIS: Are We Making Progress? * White House Material * State Department Material * Department of Defense (DOD) Material * Department of Homeland Security Material * Senate Hearing Testimony: Defeating the Islamic State in Iraq * Iraq in Crisis: The Leader al-Baghdadi * The ISIL's Stand in the Ramadi-Falluja Corridor * House Hearing Testimony: The Resurgence of Al-Qaeda in Iraq * Armed Conflict in Syria: Overview and U.S. Response * The Resurgence of Al-Qaeda in Syria and Iraq * Agencies and government sources in this book: Department of Defense, State Department, U.S. Congress, Congressional Research Service, U.S. Army, Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College.

The emergence of the Islamic State (IS) movement in Indonesia in 2014 re-energized violent extremism in Indonesia. As a result of effective counterterrorism policing, however, IS networks have been decimated and the structure of jihadism in Indonesia has shifted from organizations to autonomous networks and cells, increasingly organized via the Internet. Although support for violent extremism in Indonesia remains marginal, cells of IS followers maintain a low-level capacity to conduct lethal attacks against civilian and government targets. Most IS operations in Indonesia are sporadic and low-level attacks against the Indonesian police. Religious minorities have also been high-profile targets, as in the Surabaya church suicide bombings of 13 May 2018. There are some indications, however, of militants' renewed interest in attacking foreign targets, such as tourists on the resort island of Bali.
