Treasure Island, published in 1883, popularized the now familiar characters of pirates and brought them to rum-swilling life. When an old sailor named Billy Bones dies in the inn belonging to young Jim Hawkins’s parents, he leaves a greasy old map on which an “X” marks the spot where treasure is buried. Jim joins the crew of a ship in pursuit of Bones’s treasure, and on the seas meets up with Long John Silver, a peg-legged pirate who has infiltrated their ranks. Jim must survive mutinies and counter-mutinies, face hand-to-hand combat with drunken sailors, and outwit double-crossing thieves before the treasure can be his.

WITH NEW AND UPDATED MATERIAL Billionaire Warren Buffet, currently the third wealthiest man in the world, paid the lowest rate of tax among his office staff, including his receptionist. In 2006 the world's three biggest banana companies did nearly £400 million worth of business in Britain but paid just £128,000 in tax between them. In January 2009, US law enforcement fined Lloyds TSB $350 million after it admitted secretly channelling Iranian and Sudanese money into the US banking system. Tax havens are the most important single reason why poor people and poor countries stay poor. They lie at the very heart of the global economy, with over half the world trade processed through them. They have been instrumental in nearly every major economic event, in every big financial scandal, and in every financial crisis since the 1970s, including the latest global economic downturn. In Treasure Islands, Nicholas Shaxson shows how this happened, and what this means for you.

MUTINY, PIRATES AND BURIED TREASURE...AN ADVENTURE FOR ALL AGES! Treasure Island, an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson is a tale of buccaneers and buried gold. Originally considered a coming-of-age story, it is the most dramatized of all novels and is noted for its unique atmosphere, characters, and action, which include the sea, pirates, an uninhabited island, danger, romance, exciting adventures and wonderful heroes. The novel’s influence is enormous on popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen with parrots perched on their shoulders. Jim Hawkins seeks the treasure of an evil pirate, Captain Flint. He sets sail with Captain Smollett and his crew who are later revealed to have been pirates who served under Captain Flint, the most notable being the ship's one-legged cook Long John Silver. This tale of mutiny, pirates and buried treasure is an adventure for all ages.

This carefully crafted ebook: "Treasure Island (Illustrated Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". Stevenson conceived of the idea of Treasure Island (originally titled, "The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys") from a map of an imaginary, romantic island idly drawn by Stevenson and his stepson on a rainy day in Braemar, Scotland. Plot: An old sailor, calling himself "the captain" comes to lodge at the Admiral Benbow Inn on the west English coast during the mid-1700s, paying the innkeeper's son, Jim Hawkins, a few pennies to keep a lookout for a one-legged "seafaring man." A seaman with intact legs shows up, frightening Billy — who drinks far too much rum — into a stroke, and Billy tells Jim that his former shipmates covet the contents of his sea chest. After a visit from yet another man, Billy has another stroke and dies; Jim and his mother (his father has also died just a few days before) unlock the sea chest, finding some money, a journal, and a map. The local physician, Dr. Livesey, deduces that the map is of an island where a deceased pirate — Captain Flint — buried a vast treasure. The district squire, Trelawney, proposes buying a ship and going after the treasure, taking Livesey as ship's doctor and Jim as cabin boy.... Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson now ranks among the 26 most translated authors in the world.

For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the novel creates scenes and characters that have fired the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring. Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, 'the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas.' G. S. Fraser terms it 'an utterly original book' and goes on to write: 'There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy.

Think of the high seas and of a buccaneer ship; of a wild seaman with a sea chest full of gold; of Long John Silver; of a buried treasure and of young Jim Hawkins, the boy with the treasure map the key to it all. This is the Treasure Island and if you don't think of all this, the pirates will hunt you down and when they find you, for find you they sure will, they will truss you and carry you back to their ship and just before they feed you to the sharks, as you walk the gangplank with a sword digging sharp and sure into your back, they will sing their one last song for you. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island was not the first adventure story of pirates in the Caribbean, but it may as well have been. Since its publication in 1883, it has become the standard—the first and last word on the subject—and it remains an exhilarating, satisfying read for young and old alike to this day. This edition includes all 16 of N.C. Wyeth’s full-color paintings for the 1911 edition of the book, as well as 44 drawings by Louis Rhead for his 1915 edition. Included as an addendum at the end of the book is the essay, “My First Book: Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson on the writing of his classic. Also included are a helpful glossary of nautical and historical terms, an introduction, author bio, and bibliography. The story begins when a strange, crusty old pirate comes to stay with Jim Hawkins’ family at the Admiral Benbow Inn. The map he carries with him will put them all in danger and be the impetus for young Jim’s perilous journey with the wily Long John Silver in search of treasure on the high seas.
