The intersection of public washrooms and gender has become increasingly politicized in recent years: queer and trans folk have been harassed for allegedly using the 'wrong' washroom, while widespread campaigns have advocated for more gender-neutral facilities. In Queering Bathrooms, Sheila L. Cavanagh explores how public toilets demarcate the masculine and the feminine and condition ideas of gender and sexuality. Based on 100 interviews with GLBT and/or intersex peoples in major North American cities, Cavanagh delves into the ways that queer and trans communities challenge the rigid gendering and heteronormative composition of public washrooms. Incorporating theories from queer studies, trans studies, psychoanalysis, and the work of Michel Foucault, Cavanagh argues that the cultural politics of excretion is intimately related to the regulation of gender and sexuality. Public toilets house the illicit and act as repositories for the social unconscious. Also offering suggestions for imagining a more inclusive public washroom, Queering Bathrooms asserts that although toilets are not typically considered within traditional scholarly bounds, they form a crucial part of our modern understanding of sex and gender.

This book examines the state of access to criminal justice by considering the health of the lawyer-client relationship under legal aid. In the largest study of its kind for some two decades, ethnographic fieldwork is used to gain a fresh perspective upon the interaction that lies at the heart of the criminal justice system's equality of arms. The research produces two contradictory messages; in interview, lawyers claim a positive relationship with their clients while, under participant observation, there emerges quite the opposite. Paying more heed to what was seen than what was said, it is supposed that these lawyers were able to talk the talk but not walk the walk. The lawyers treat their clients with wanton disrespect; making fun of them, talking over them and pushing them to plead guilty – despite protestations to the contrary. The evidence is damning for this branch of the legal profession – and tragic for the clients who depend on them. What is responsible for this malaise...inadequate financial remuneration? Increased time pressures? Lapsed ethical training? Whatever the origin, this book is intended to show the profession that there is a problem – one that could get worse unless they choose to learn from the mistakes made by the lawyers in this study.

Book Description 2000 Hollywood Diaries, is the true, intimate, and sometimes disturbing diaries of Morgana Welch. The diaries begin in 1971 and mark the beginning of a young girl's search for reality and sense of self in a section of society that was anything but normal, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The diaries reflect a way of life that would afford Morgana the pleasure and pain of living in the world of rock and roll. Hollywood Diaries takes you inside the world of a 1970s groupie. In the days before cell phones, you-tube, and myspace when you had to be face to face (fantastically lusciously face to face...) with the center of the rock-and-roll vortex. Hollywood Diaries will take you on a vicarious journey paying homage to the world of rock and roll, for better and worse. Her recollections are not steeped in rose colored hues that are tempting when addressing the escapades of youth. While great care has been taken to assure that some of the players are not marred by their past behavior, the events and life portrayed is as it happened, without judgment, and without regret. "You kept a very good diary. Everything in it is one hundred percent TRUE!!" - Chuck Ruff, Edgar Winter band. "The stories you told in your book brought back fond memories for me of the crazy fun times we had." Bill Lordan - Sly and the Family Stone, Robin Trower "I saw that 'infamous groupie' photo in Stephen Davis's Hammer of the Gods and always wondered who the girls were. You are a fine writer and I enjoy your voice a lot. I love hearing about the groupie heyday and I really admire how you manage to come across in your writings, insightful and warm. Others have glossed over the seedier sides that must surely have been there. You handle them with a terrific approach, without overdoing it for shock value. Thanks for sharing your stories; it's great to finally know who the pretty blonde girl in the middle is!" - Kerstin Exemplary reflective storytelling, the hooks revolving around musicians we all know, the central inspiration in the end though is one of the human spirit, survival and honesty. The flow of consciousness with its celebrity thread is arabesque, organic and finessed. - Shorty I thought it was excellent. An honest snapshot of amazing times that will probably never happen again. Have also just read Laurel Canyon, which features some of Morgana's story as well. I agree with some other posts on this site...Morgana should write a detailed account of her life. Wild and magical...and surviving was nothing short of a miracle! - Tony McGraw

As a boy in post-War England, legendary Kinks singer/songwriter Ray Davies fell in love with America âe" its movies and music, its culture of freedom fed his imagination. In Americana, Davies tries to make sense of his long love-hate relationship with the country that both inspires and frustrates him, and where he nearly lost his life in a street shooting. Some of the most fascinating characters in pop culture and the British Invasion make appearances, from the famous to the behind-the-scenes players. The book is interspersed with lyrics and also includes photographs from Davies's own collection and the Kinksâe(tm) archive. From his quintessentially English perspective, Davies âe" with candour, humour, and wit âe" takes us on a very personal road trip through his life and storied career as a rock star, and reveals what music, fame and America really mean to him.

A rich collection of interdisciplinary essays, this book explores the question: what is to be found at the intersection of the sensorium and law’s empire? Examining the problem of how legal rationalities try to grasp what can only be sensed through the body, these essays problematize the Cartesian framework that has long separated the mind from the body, reason from feeling and the human from the animal. In doing so, they consider how the sensorium can operate, variously, as a tool of power or as a means of countering the exercise of regulatory force. The senses, it is argued, operate as a vector for the implication of subjects in legal webs, but also as a powerful site of resistance to legal definition and determination. From the sensorium of animals to technologically mediated perception, the ways in which the law senses and the ways in which senses are brought before the law invite a questioning of the categories of liberal humanism. And, as this volume demonstrates, this questioning opens up the both interesting and important possibility of imagining other sensual subjectivities.

This book investigates how and why the criminal law differentiates between different types of body alterations, with particular reference to how they are conceptualised within legal discourse. By drawing connections between types of body alteration that have traditionally been considered separately and discretely, the book allows analytical conclusions to be made about the law’s treatment of the general category of ’body alteration’ rather than merely about specific types of body alteration. Taking legal discourse as its analytical focus, the author critically examines a number of case studies to determine the techniques and processes by which some body alterations are discursively constructed as legitimate and legally approved, and by which other body alterations are discursively constructed as illegitimate and legally sanctioned. Specifically, the body alterations that are addressed include sadomasochistic injuries; female genital modification and male circumcision; cosmetic surgery, body modification and healthy limb amputation; and sex reassignment surgery and genital ’normalisation’ surgery. International in scope, the discursive analysis in the book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of socio-legal and cultural studies.
