From the office to domestic interiors to shops, images surround us in modern life. The internet has increased this visual onslaught exponentially. Is there a systematic order to this seemingly endless array of pictures and depictions? Looking at picture-making traditions around the world, the author demonstrates how schemes of depiction are ordered throughout all ages and across all cultures. Drawing on a wide range of examples - from painting and drawing to film, photography and the Web - Visual Impact analyzes the theory and practice of visual representation. Pictures and images provide a cognitive context through which people can explore and understand their world. They frame and shape daily life. By considering the techniques and systems that inform visual displays, the author examines how cultural values and traditions shape particular visual styles. Drawing on the growing field of visual anthropology, Visual Impact sets image making in an historical and global context, and uses it as a window for exploring the human condition at a deeper level. Anyone interested in the cultural role of art, film, the internet and interactive media will find this book an exciting and stimulating read.

The benchmark of good graphic design is that its intended message is accurately communicated. But good design is everywhere. To be lauded as great, design must do more. It must have presence, communicating with punch, panache, perhaps even presumption. Designers needn't fear solutions that stand alone to get noticed. Indeed, they have an obligation to devise the most original and arresting means to make the intended point. We call this visual impact, a quality possessed by each of the 249 projects featured within. What starts as an original, well conceived idea may end with a bang. Or not. Restraint is even harder to pull off, but, when successful, yields every bit the impact of a solution that shouts. You'll see examples of both inside. And read about them too. Essays, enhanced by the words of contributing designers themselves, accompany each of the nine sections. From packaging to posters, books, brochures, promotions, and more, the selected works represent the best in print from 16 countries.

Digital Storytelling written by Shilo T. McClean and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-26 with Performing Arts categories.

How digital visual effects in film can be used to support storytelling: a guide for scriptwriters and students. Computer-generated effects are often blamed for bad Hollywood movies. Yet when a critic complains that "technology swamps storytelling" (in a review of Van Helsing, calling it "an example of everything that is wrong with Hollywood computer-generated effects movies"), it says more about the weakness of the story than the strength of the technology. In Digital Storytelling, Shilo McClean shows how digital visual effects can be a tool of storytelling in film, adding narrative power as do sound, color, and "experimental" camera angles—other innovative film technologies that were once criticized for being distractions from the story. It is time, she says, to rethink the function of digital visual effects. Effects artists say—contrary to the critics—that effects always derive from story. Digital effects are a part of production, not post-production; they are becoming part of the story development process. Digital Storytelling is grounded in filmmaking, the scriptwriting process in particular. McClean considers crucial questions about digital visual effects—whether they undermine classical storytelling structure, if they always call attention to themselves, whether their use is limited to certain genres—and looks at contemporary films (including a chapter-long analysis of Steven Spielberg's use of computer-generated effects) and contemporary film theory to find the answers. McClean argues that to consider digital visual effects as simply contributing the "wow" factor underestimates them. They are, she writes, the legitimate inheritors of film storycraft.

Multithreading For Visual Effects written by Martin Watt and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-29 with Computers categories.

Tackle the Challenges of Parallel Programming in the Visual Effects Industry In Multithreading for Visual Effects, developers from DreamWorks Animation, Pixar, Side Effects, Intel, and AMD share their successes and failures in the messy real-world application area of production software. They provide practical advice on multithreading techniques and visual effects used in popular visual effects libraries (such as Bullet, OpenVDB, and OpenSubdiv), one of the industry’s leading visual effects packages (Houdini), and proprietary animation systems. This information is valuable not just to those in the visual effects arena, but also to developers of high performance software looking to increase performance of their code. Diverse Solutions to Solve Performance Problems After an introductory chapter, each subsequent chapter presents a case study that illustrates how the authors used multithreading techniques to achieve better performance. The authors discuss the problems that occurred and explain how they solved them. The case studies encompass solutions for shaving milliseconds, solutions for optimizing longer running tasks, multithreading techniques for modern CPU architectures, and massive parallelism using GPUs. Some of the case studies include open source projects so you can try out these techniques for yourself and see how well they work.
