This publication celebrates the career of painter and printmaker Charles W. Bartlett (1860-1940) and provides the only complete catalogue raisonne of his known woodblock and intaglio prints which, in the past decade, have reached an international audience. It also includes a Bartlett-family memoir and an essay by Richard Miles, author of several books and many articles on Western artists who, like Bartlett, gained fame as printmakers working in Japan with the legendary Watanabe Print Shop.Born in England, Charles W. Bartlett enjoyed acclaim as a painter in London before spending several years in Asia and arriving in Honolulu in 1917, where he remained for the rest of his life. Bartlett is recognized for his depictions of China, Japan, India, and Hawaii in a variety of media. The publication surveys Bartlett's entire career beginning with his early work -- deeply human representations of harsh peasant life in Brittany and rural Holland -- and explores his fascination with Asia and Hawaii. It offers additional insights into Bartlett's considerations on humankind, the 'exoticism' of the East, and taste and patronage in Hawaii. The catalogue raisonne, compiled by lead author Jennifer Saville, curator of Western art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, with Richard Miles, documents the extensive holdings of Bartlett prints in the collection of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the finest such collection anywhere.

Of all the sophisticated traditional arts and crafts of Japan, woodblock prints are probably the most widely known in the West. The bold yet refined compositions are as fresh to the Western eye today as they were when they first came to the attention of the Impressionists in the nineteenth century. With their fluid lines, intricate carving and delicate colors, Japanese prints are still as fascinating as ever. In this book, Rebecca Salter takes us through the history of the Japanese woodblock, discusses the materials, tools, and papers available (and their Western equivalents) and shows how to get the most out of them through interesting step-by-step projects. The work of an international group of artists shows the varied and exciting prints being produced today.

Edna Boies Hopkins (1872-1937) is best known for herfloral woodblock prints that range from delicate Japanese-inspiredstylizations to boldly colored and progressivelymodernist works. In her brief twenty-year career, Hopkins producedseventy-four known woodblock prints, including figurativework and landscapes as well as floral compositions. This catalogueraisonné is the first in-depth study of this once well-known Americanartist. It illustrates all of Hopkins's known prints, related drawings, andstudies. Born in Hudson, Michigan, Hopkins attended the Art Academy of Cincinnatifrom 1895 to 1898. In 1899 she took classes with the influential artist ArthurWesley Dow, an advocate of Japanese art. Following her marriage in 1904, Hopkinsand her husband settled in Paris, where they remained until the outbreakof World War I. After returning to America, Hopkins became part of a smallgroup of artists in Provincetown, whose innovations in woodblock printmakinghave come to be known as the Provincetown print or the white line woodcut. In1917, a visit to the Cumberland Falls region of Kentucky provided the inspirationfor some of Hopkins's most important prints which predate the work ofAmerican regionalist painters and printmakers by a decade or more. In addition to the catalogue raisonné, Edna Boies Hopkins includes much new biographical research along with a census of her prints and a comprehensive list of her exhibitions.
