This book focuses on how inexpensive maps, produced for the masses, accrued cultural value for everyday consumers in Renaissance Italy, who wanted to own and display maps in their homes as works of artnot for practical use, but for their cultural capital as commodities. Genevieve Carlton considers how and why maps took on this new identity, as coveted and revered material objects and symbols of status and power, which in turn elevated or reinforced the public personae of their owners. She reconstructs the market for maps by examining household inventories as well as the ways in which maps were displayed in the interiors of Renaissance homes. Her survey shows that consumers from every level of society owned and displayed maps and used them for personal gain, to reinforce a particular identity."

Though the practical value of maps during the sixteenth century is well documented, their personal and cultural importance has been relatively underexamined. In Worldly Consumers, Genevieve Carlton explores the growing availability of maps to private consumers during the Italian Renaissance and shows how map acquisition and display became central tools for constructing personal identity and impressing one’s peers. Drawing on a variety of sixteenth-century sources, including household inventories, epigrams, dedications, catalogs, travel books, and advice manuals, Worldly Consumers studies how individuals displayed different maps in their homes as deliberate acts of self-fashioning. One citizen decorated with maps of Bruges, Holland, Flanders, and Amsterdam to remind visitors of his military prowess, for example, while another hung maps of cities where his ancestors fought or governed, in homage to his auspicious family history. Renaissance Italians turned domestic spaces into a microcosm of larger geographical places to craft cosmopolitan, erudite identities for themselves, creating a new class of consumers who drew cultural capital from maps of the time.

To create successful consumer places, a retail store may be designed to look like the Australian outback. A museum may have the appearance of a department store. Travel tours may wend through "native" communities that stage "traditional" behavior. Umberto Eco calls this "authentication", or "instances where the American imagination demands the real thing and, to attain it, must fabricate the absolute fake". In Place, Modernity, and the Consumer's World, geographer Robert Sack explores this phenomenon along with other problems of modernity, mass consumption, and advertising to present a dynamic picture of how space and place define the world of the consumer. He begins with the geographical premise that space and place provide a means by which we make sense of the world and through which we act. He expands this premise to form a relational framework for geographical analysis which is used to show how space is embedded in the realms of meaning, nature, and social relations. He proceeds to demonstrate how places are defined by the ways in which they bring together and transform these three realms. Sack then turns to the consumer's world, the shopping malls, department stores, theme parks, and resorts that form "the everyday landscape of mass consumption". He looks at how these places - together with the advertising that idealizes the way products are supposed to create places and contexts - are constructed and how they intentionally alter aspects of reality in such a way as to create those disorienting qualities associated with "postmodernism". Finally, Sack considers place as both an empirical and a moral concept, and establishes a geographical basis for making moral judgments about it.Using that framework, he finds that places of consumption impair judgment because they disguise the relationships between meaning, nature, and social relations.

How did intricately detailed sixteenth-century maps reveal the start of the Atlantic World? Beginning around 1500, in the decades following Columbus's voyages, the Atlantic Ocean moved from the periphery to the center on European world maps. This brief but highly significant moment in early modern European history marks not only a paradigm shift in how the world was mapped but also the opening of what historians call the Atlantic World. But how did sixteenth-century chartmakers and mapmakers begin to conceptualize—and present to the public—an interconnected Atlantic World that was open and navigable, in comparison to the mysterious ocean that had blocked off the Western hemisphere before Columbus's exploration? In Mapping an Atlantic World, circa 1500, Alida C. Metcalf argues that the earliest surviving maps from this era, which depict trade, colonization, evangelism, and the movement of peoples, reveal powerful and persuasive arguments about the possibility of an interconnected Atlantic World. Blending scholarship from two fields, historical cartography and Atlantic history, Metcalf explains why Renaissance cosmographers first incorporated sailing charts into their maps and began to reject classical models for mapping the world. Combined with the new placement of the Atlantic, the visual imagery on Atlantic maps—which featured decorative compass roses, animals, landscapes, and native peoples—communicated the accessibility of distant places with valuable commodities. Even though individual maps became outdated quickly, Metcalf reveals, new mapmakers copied their imagery, which then repeated on map after map. Individual maps might fall out of date, be lost, discarded, or forgotten, but their geographic and visual design promoted a new way of seeing the world, with an interconnected Atlantic World at its center. Describing the negotiation that took place between a small cadre of explorers and a wider class of cartographers, chartmakers, cosmographers, and artists, Metcalf shows how exploration informed mapmaking and vice versa. Recognizing early modern cartographers as significant agents in the intellectual history of the Atlantic, Mapping an Atlantic World, circa 1500 includes around 50 beautiful and illuminating historical maps.
