Summary : The type VIIC was a slightly modified version of the successful VIIB. They had basically the same engine layout and power, but were slightly larger and heavier which made them not quite as fast as the VIIB. 5 torpedo tubes (4 at the bow and one at the stern) were installed in all but the following boats; only two bow tubes (U-72, U-78, U-80, U-554 and U-555) and no stern tube (U-203, U-331, U-351, U-401, U-431 and U-651). The VIIC was the workhorse of the German U-boat force in World War Two from 1941 onwards and boats of this type were being built throughout the war. The first VIIC boat being commissioned was the U-69 in 1940. The VIIC was an effective fighting machine and was seen in almost all areas where the U-boat force operated although their range was not as great as the one of the larger IX types. The VIIC came into service as the "Happy Days" were almost over and it was this boat that faced the final defeat to the Allied anti-submarine campaign in late 1943 and 1944. Perhaps the most famous VIIC boat was the U-96 which is featured in the movie Das Boot, other noticeable boats were the U-flak boats. Many of these boats were fitted with the Schnorkel in 1944-1945. This design saw one more improvement in the type VIIC/41 boat. The larger mine-laying type VIID was a direct variant of the VIIC.

Summary : The Type XXI U-boot was one of the few types of weapon that, despite being unable to take part in combat, completely changed the character of naval actions at sea. It was the first true submarine in history. The other types of vessels designed so far were basically "diving ships" that might have been underwater for some time, but most of the time they had to be on the surface because their underwater range was severely limited. Under water they were slow and not maneuverable, and often had to emerge onto the surface to charge their electric batteries. The Type XXI was designed from the outset as a true submarine whose natural environment was to be the deep seas.

Summary : High speed boats necessarily use surface-piercing propellers, but there is very little literature available on surface piercing. My aim is to quantify what I have understood about speed on the water from theory and practice combined. I'm uniquely qualified to write about the combination of fast planing hulls, propellers, and hydrodynamics. I know how a race boat feels under all conditions from 60-85 mph from driving successfully in competition. I have reworked and improved many existing propellers for racing and also for better performance on sport boats. I do my own work on boat bottoms, propellers, and motors. I've set nine outboard speed records, have won four national championships, and I was twice US-1 in my class. On the other side of the coin I'm physics professor with adequate theoretical background in vortex theory and hydrodynamics more generally. The completely new results, not found elsewhere in the literature, are: power-diameter-RPM scaling for propellers and comparison with speed record data, inadequacy of all available measurements of torque coefficients in surface piercing, the difference between efficient surface piercing and supercavitation, complete set of equations (using the mean camber surface to define pitch and camber) for the design of a cleaver from hub to tip, definition of path pitch, use of path pitch to determine the parabolic camber, photos of 3D CAD drawings and 3D printed out models, idealized calculations of torque coefficients and efficiencies, speed-power- weigh scaling law and comparison with existing speed records, clear definition of lift onset, clear definition of planning, lift on monohulls and tunnels, center of pressure and stability of tunnels, estimation of lift coefficient for a v-bottom/tunnel sponson and comparison with data
