Dil Dhadakne Do Movie Review – 5 years of ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’: Did you know that Deepika Padukone wanted to be a part of the Ranveer Singh starrer?
Zoya Akhtar delivered several hit entertainers and today one of her popular films ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ celebrates 5 years. She beautifully explored various relationships in the intense story with an ensemble cast of Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh, Farhan Akhtar and Shefali Shah. Reminiscing about an unforgettable incident that happened before the film went on floors, Zoya shared, “It was my toughest shoot personally and if I have to look back now, I think I would have changed the title. Because I think that the title was kind of flippant for what the movie was actually about. I don’t think it gave it the gravitas it needed.”

‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ had majority of its portion shot on a big ship. Part of the difficult task of shooting Zoya added, “It was a difficult shoot, I mean logistically it was difficult – 25 important actors on a ship with the crew. We had other passengers on the ship, we could not block the whole ship , so we shot around it. The ship had a technical problem when we had to roll, so for the first 10 days it was constructed. This actually turned out to be a blessing for us, because we had the ship to ourselves. But for Ritesh, it was a nightmare bcos we were 200 people in barcelona ready to board the ship and the ship was docked in marseille in france i don’t know how he did it but overnight in 2 days he had tons and tons of equipment and we moved to France. It was so logistically crazy.”
Aamir Khan was also a part of this memorable film as he provided the voice for Pluto Mehra, the bullmastiff of the Mehra family. t hit one of the right places.
In Karan Johar’s films, you see big, happy, shiny families living in palatial houses and loving each other no matter what. Zoya Akhtar introduces a dysfunctional family to her viewers. Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) and his wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) invite all their friends to join them on a cruise to celebrate their wedding anniversary. The farce of her ‘happy’ family comes undone on this holiday. They invite their son Kabir (Ranveer Singh) in the direction of Sood’s (Parmeet Sethi) daughter who is invited only because they see alliance with her as a good business proposition. They have done this before with their daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) who is now stuck in a miserable marriage. Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma) is a dancer on the cruise and Kabir takes a liking to her, giving his parents heartburn and to add to that, Ayesha also drops a bombshell. Meanwhile, Kamal and Neelam’s marriage is more fragile than ever. Throw an ex-lover into this mix and you wonder how this dysfunctional family will reach the happy ending. But it happens..
One thing you can expect in a Zoya Akhtar film is the otherworldly experience. Whether it’s the story, the locations, the characters and their lives. It is a world that only she explores. Last time, she took the viewers on an exciting adventure trip, including jumping from planes, deep sea diving and being chased by the bulls. This time she takes you on a cruise, but strangely keeps you indoors most of the time. The interesting part is all the quirky characters, even if they are the typical high-society clichés from movies like Side 3. The three friends of Neelam will take you in flashback of a similar trio from Hum Saath Saath Hain. The portly Punjabi dost (Khanna), the snooty Soods and the adorable family dog Pluto (the narrator of the story) can’t convince you to get on board with them, but are fun. The part of DDD that does connect is the brother-sister relationship (reportedly this was inspired by the director’s closeness with her brother Farhan). Everyone in the cast plays their part effectively but it is Anil Kapoor who stands apart. He is simply brilliant, whether he is selfishly manipulating his children, fighting for them or begging for his wife’s forgiveness. If you thought that Ranveer Singh could only play loud and dramatic characters, you will change your mind after watching his performance in this movie. He plays the caring brother so well that maybe now he can just chase girls with a rakhi. Anushka matches Ranveer’s energy in a small role. Priyanka is limited. Farhan is perfect in his cameo. Shefali will make you squirm in your seat when she stuffs her face with desserts.
Dil Dhadakne Do Movie Review: Ranveer Singh Will Slay You
The movie just seems to go on longer than it should. It’s almost a three hour drive. It’s not a bad trip, but it’s mostly flat. Save for a few funny (Zarina’s Wahab’s long list of illnesses) and emotional moments (Kamal’s heart attack), the story doesn’t hit any of the right spots. There is an ensemble cast but the story only revolves around the Mehras. The constant narration by Pluto gets tiring after a point. The feeling that like DDD could have been a better film, but it never reaches its potential, stays with you as the credits roll.

Director Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ coasts on the premise of a dysfunctional rich family finding their lost mojo as they finally accept and love each other for who they are.
Where else but in the movies do you set out on a 10-day luxury cruise in the Mediterranean and find yourself magically solving problems along the way? Director Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ coasts on the premise of a dysfunctional rich family finding their lost mojo as they finally accept and love each other for who they are. This is a rich chocolate truffle of a movie – extravagant with its emotions, and ends on a sweet note. It’s that term we bandy about so often – feel-good cinema.
And yet, there are choppy waters in this journey. As the film approaches the three-hour mark, you feel yourself getting restless. Despite all the hurt feelings flying on this ship, these are rich people’s problems. Not to say that rich people don’t have real problems – just that in ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ it all seems to revolve around marriage, bankruptcy, marriage, unrequited love, how society will see you and… I have called marriage?
The film welcomes you into the world of the messed-up Mehras – patriarch Kamal (Anil Kapoor) and his wife Neelam (Shefali Shah), and their children Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) and Kabir (Ranveer Singh). Each of them is unhappy, but have no idea how to fix their lives. We are introduced to these four and their problems by the perceptive Pluto, a bull mastiff who considers himself the healthiest member of the Mehra family. Voiced by Aamir Khan, his lines written by Javed Akhtar, the whole idea of the reflective dog feels like a gimmick, and one that is quickly losing its novelty. ((break time))
Movie Review: Dil Dhadakne Do
What keeps you invested throughout the film are these high-profile, often hilarious characters and their quirks. The script is full of humor, and the dialogues, written by Farhan Akhtar, are clever and consistently witty. Take Kamal Mehra, a “self-made” millionaire, who never hesitates to repeat his rags-to-riches story. Behind the scenes, he is popping anxiety pills because his company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and his son Kabir is clearly not ready to take over. All Kabir longs for is his plane, which will soon be sold to reduce business debts.
Kamal’s wife Neelam is that perfectly outfitted socialite you instantly recognize – the one who turns a blind eye to her husband’s sanctification, the one who fakes a smile, the one who schemes with her husband to son to push to marry a rival businessman his daughter to marry save the company. The one left is Ayesha – a pariah now that she is married. All anyone expects from her is to make a baby; never mind that she is a successful career woman who is miserable with her obnoxious mother’s boyfriend (Rahul Bose) and his hypochondriac mother (Zarina Wahab, a complete hoot).
This motley crew embarks on the cruise to celebrate the Senior Mehras’ 30th anniversary, with various relatives and close friends together for company. Complications abound – Ayesha wants a divorce, Kabir collapses
