स्वामी विवेकानन्दजी ने अमरीका में रहते समय ज्ञानयोग पर कुछ प्रवचन दिये थे जो उनकी एक शिष्या कुमारी एस्. ई. वाल्डो ने लिपिबद्ध कर लिये थे। तत्पश्चात् स्वामीजी के गुरुभाई स्वामी सारदानन्द सन् 1896 ई. में जब वेदान्तप्रचार हेतु अमरीका गये तब उन्हों ने ये प्रवचन कु. वाल्डो की नोटबुक से लिख लिये। इन प्रवचनों के साथ स्वामी विवेकानन्दजी के अन्य दो प्रवचनों ‘ज्ञानयोग का परिचय’ तथा ‘ज्ञानसाधना’ का सारांश सम्मिलित कर प्रस्तुत पुस्तक ‘‘ज्ञानयोग पर प्रवचन’’ सहर्ष पाठकों के सम्मुख रख रहे हैं। स्वामीजी ने ज्ञानयोग का विवेचन उपनिषद् तथा भगवद्गीता के आधार पर किया है और इस प्रकार इन प्रवचनों में उन्होंने यह स्पष्ट दर्शाया है कि ज्ञानयोग साधक को किस तरह मुक्ति के लक्ष्य की ओर ले जाता है। साथ ही उन्होंने यह भी बड़े सरल ढंग से बतला दिया है कि ज्ञानयोग के मार्ग में सफल होने के लिए किन गुणों तथा साधना की आवश्यकता है। इस ज्ञानयोग का अनुसरण कर आत्मज्ञान में प्रतिष्ठित हो शाश्वत सुख की प्राप्ति किस प्रकार हो सकती है, इसका दिग्दर्शन भी स्वामीजी ने बड़े सुन्दर एवं युक्तियुक्त रूप से किया है। आदर्श जीवनगठन के लिए ज्ञानयोग किस रूप से उपयुक्त है, इस सम्बन्ध में स्वामी विवेकानन्दजी के ओजपूर्ण विचार सभी का निश्चित मार्गदर्शन करेंगे।
