Mario Antoine explores the origin and development of football in Malawi, previously known as Nyasland, in this book. Little is known about the humble beginnings of Malawi football and how two separate associations for Europeans and Africans drove its development. With other countries such as South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, and Mauritius also having separate associations, this was not uncommon. The author highlights how the British, who travelled overseas to work and as missionaries, played a critical role in introducing football to Nyasland and other countries. After the British colony attained independence in 1964 and changed its name to Malawi, the sport continued to grow in popularity. As the years went by, apart from selected matches, games were played on a regular basis among Southern Region clubs, which formed the Indian Sport Club in 1920, followed by the Goans Club in 1928. Some of the families that pioneered the formation of the European association known as Nyasaland Football Association still grace the shores of this land today.

With the death of John McCracken in 2017, Malawi lost a pre-eminent historian. This book celebrates McCracken’s contribution to the study of Malawi’s history and seeks to build on his legacy. Part of his genius was that he identified themes that hold the key to understanding the history of Malawi in its broader perspective. The authors contributing to this volume address these themes, assessing the progress of historiography and setting an agenda for the further advance of historical studies. The book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and all who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Malawi’s past and present.

** 'Delighted to learn from this very enjoyable new book that the first ever game of football played in Austria was won by the Vienna Cricket Club.' Tom Holland, Historian and Broadcaster Have we matched Wembley 1966 and 2022, or lost again on penalties? **As a football fan in the Home Nations, there is at least one thing of which you can be sure. Even if sometimes other countries play it better than us, they'll forever have to thank Britain for the fun, the excitement, the tragedy, the triumph, the pain, the pleasure and the sheer gloriousness of the best sport in the world. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, it was Britain that first spread the beautiful game across the world. Cornish miners took football skills along with their pasties to Mexico; Iraqi football legend Ammo Baba learnt the game at an RAF base; the Buenos Aires Cricket Club gave the world Argentine football; and Romanian dentist Iuliu Weiner got not one an English education but a passion for football too. This is a book about football, yes, but it is also a book about all the countries of the world, about shared passion and shared humanity. It's how Britain brought football to the world. **

This pioneering and fascinating book is the first to tell the story of the remarkably enduring bonds between Malawi and Scotland from the time of David Livingstone to the flourishing cultural, economic and religious relationships of the present day. Why should there be any significant relationship between one small nation on Europe's north-western seaboard and another in the interior of Africa? How did it reach the stage where in 2012 Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs in the Scottish Government, could describe Malawi as Scotland's "sister nation"? This book attempts an answer.

Football written by William J. Murray and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Soccer categories.

There have been several attempts to trace the story of the spread of football from its pre-industrial origins to its codification in the association game in 1863, from whence it swept the British Isles before going on to conquer the world, but this is the first book to place the growth of the game firmly in its social and cultural background. Murray is a skilled historian, as well as a football enthusiast; in this comprehensive history he covers old ground with a refreshing originality, presents new information with a revealing clarity, and combines illustrative anecdotes with incisive analysis. He presents the reader with a highly readable account of a complicated story that places the growth of the world's most popular game firmly in its cultural context.
