Es wurde geschätzt, dass in westeuropäischen Ländern 10-30 % der Bevölkerung bereits Tranquilizer genommen haben und 2 % davon abhängig sind (vgl. Elsesser/Sartory 2001). Medikamentenabhängigkeit als Begriff selber ist eher als Oberbegriff zu verstehen, welcher die Form der Abhängigkeit zu anderen Suchtstörungen wie Drogen oder Alkohol verdeutlichen soll. In der Mehrzahl handelt es sich hier um Schlaf- und Beruhigungsmittel aus der Familie der Benzodiazepine. Medikamentensucht wird häufig auch als Altersucht, heimliche Sucht, Frauensucht oder iatrogene Abhängigkeit bezeichnet. Damit werden bereits einige ätiologische Merkmale dieser Störung hervorgehoben. So sind zum einen Frauen häufiger betroffen als Männer und die Tendenz der Abhängigen mit dem zunehmenden Alter her steigend. Ebenso sind die Betroffenen im Vergleich zu Drogen- oder Alkoholabhängigen unauffälliger und in der Regel sozial integriert. Das Schlagwort der iatrogenen Abhängigkeit hingegen verdeutlicht, dass eine Abhängigkeit in hohem Maße durch die ärztliche Verordnungspraxis hervorgerufen wird(vgl. Elsesser/Sartory 2001).
