It is predicted that artificial intelligence [Al], and the “big data” on which Al is based, will become one of the most challenging board issues in the next ten years. This book, AI Leadership for Boards – The Future of Corporate Governance, offers to provide guidance on how corporate boards should respond to this challenge. The findings indicate that while boards are aware of the importance of Al implementation as a key competitive advantage, they will need to develop two competence areas to successfully steward their firms into an Al-based future: [1] guiding Al operational capability and [2] supervising Al governance capability. These areas are combined to create the Boards 4 AI Leadership Matrix – a practical tool for boards to map and develop their Al implementation. The matrix is accompanied by a set of questions to help boards develop a better understanding of where they are today in terms of the development of their Al competences as well as set an ambition for future development. Good and smart decisions should be distinguished from wise decision-making — especially in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) where algorithms are increasingly used to automate business processes or to augment the accuracy and speed of decisions. This book argues why specific forms of intelligence as well as consciousness and enhanced conscience are crucial to make wise decisions — with consciousness to be clearly distinguished from intelligence. It also addresses why machine learning and smart computers (AI) are plausibly able to make 'smart' (and thus to a certain extent 'intelligent') decisions but definitely unable to help us to become wiser. In essence, optimizing a desired output in a business context will require a balanced approach with cognitive awareness and ethical reflection — synthesizing intuitive and algorithmic thinking — encompassing short-term profit and longer-term envisioning, and aiming to optimize created and captured value for shareholders while taking the concerns of those who have a real stake in the organization seriously. If business is about creating and sharing value in a future that is both 'digital' and 'relational', then innovative technologies like AI will play an increasingly important role. Consequently, mindful executives and their responsible boards therefore need to acknowledge the limitations of AI in business — especially when the uncertain future is estimated to be rather volatile or ambiguous than stable.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reality. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, or a Robot Apocalypse depending on whom you ask, is already underway. The transition has already started. But what it means in terms of leadership? How should leaders prepare for the dramatic shifts in the global workforce? The authors, emerging technology risk researchers and practitioners, demystify the processes behind this revolution. Rather than offering another sensationalistic, panic-inducing view on AI – or its overly-optimistic alternative – the authors explain the reality of AI implementation in business environments. The transformed economy will need a new kind of executives – motivators, innovators and social experimenters – those that have, paradoxically, developed their distinctly human skills. The Future of Leadership in the Age of AI clarifies those new roles and makes the transition easier.

Leaders, don't let AI get the best of you. AI is coming fast and will affect every part of a business, including the role of the leader. And up until now, leaders have largely ceded their role in the transformation--pushing determination of strategy out to tech teams and leaving investment decisions with groups that don't have a full view of the organization. Just when responsible leadership is more imperative than ever, leaders are not stepping up to understand and execute in the new world of human-machine collaboration. A generation of AI transformation failures awaits if leaders don't connect their use of AI to their strategies. This book helps leaders retake control of the wildly rapid deployment of AI across organizations. It outlines cleanly and concisely nine actions leaders need to take to successfully steward a transition to a more AI-centric future that will lead to growth for all--companies and workers--and avoid the kinds of mistakes that author David De Cremer has seen many early adopters already make. This is not a book about AI technology itself or the latest developments in machine learning but rather a clarion call for leaders to take their rightful place at the front of the AI revolution and lead their organization into the new world.
