[...] What is missing in the game is the fear, the consequences, the flesh and blood and the soldier lifestyle. [...] Instead, the game is an instantaneous entry into the life of a soldier, without the hardships, the dilemmas, and the physical training and conditioning which is part and parcel of a soldier's life. [...] During the Cold War, roughly between the end of the second world war and the fall of the Berlin wall, the enemy other was a conveniently homogenised Eastern Bloc. [...] Following the collapse of the Cold War framework, it became a much more difficult task to orient US State identity and by extension, the role of its military.22 Manifest in the game, the enemy other which would orient the identity and purpose of the US Army is absent.
