Excerpt from Annual Report of the Director of the Mint to the Secretary of the Treasury: For the Year Ended June 30, 1876 The decline in the value of silver and the approach of the time fixed by law for specie resumption has led to a proposition for the restoration of the Silver dollar of 4125 grains, wit-h unrestricted coinage and nu limited legal-tender. This proposition, if adopted, would make the relative value of gold to silver in the coinage as 1 to or very nearly 1 to 16. A dollar of grains, which would correspond exactly to the relation of 1' to 16, and one based on the ratio of 1 to 155, have also been proposed. Excerpt from Annual Report of the Director of the Mint to the Secretary of the Treasury: For the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1881 On account of the continued heavy import of foreign gold coin and the payment of its value immediately upon assay in American coin it became necessary to increase the monthly gold coinage at the Philadelphia Mint to supply the Treasury with coin thus paid out. Its gold coinage had averaged previous to the heavy gold import of 1880 less than but in 1881, besides coining silver and minor coins, its gold coinage amounted to and at the close of the fiscal year the mint held of uncoined gold bullion. This increased coinage necessitated the employment of a larger work ing force and extra hours of labor, and also much heavier purchases of copper and other supplies.
