El Ejército se ha mantenido en todo momento silencioso, al menos inicialmente, ante la proclamación de las distintas formas de ser gobernados los españoles, pretendiendo dar fuerza a las instituciones para hacer viable y pacífico el tránsito hacia los nuevo sistemas y procedimientos que se iban adoptando, pero el estado de conciencia social estaba en abierta pugna con los principios en que se asentaba el Antiguo Régimen, por lo que la crisis no podía hacerse esperar, siendo humillado, desnaturalizado, se expurgaron sus filas, se le exigió luchar casi sin medios en numerosos frentes, mal vestido, peor calzado y deficientemente alimentado, sin olvidar todos los intentos de fomentar en su seno la insidiosa y destructora indisciplina y los escándalos de ascensos por méritos no siempre contrastados, además del degradante cabildeo e innumerables injusticias en los ascensos que debieran haber sido —pero no lo fueron— normales. Su única inquietud ha sido en todo momento y lo sigue siendo la unidad de España. Desasosiego que por otra parte ha sido la meta y guía de su andadura a lo largo de todos los tiempos, en cualquier momento histórico, con cualquier sistema político y cualquiera que hayan sido las circunstancias. A lo largo de la historia patria, muchos han sido los interesados en mantener el divorcio entre la nación y su ejército y este estaba decidido a demostrar que los militares vivían apartados de la política y no estaban interesados en obstaculizar el desenvolvimiento de los programas de los partidos, aunque de hecho se vieran desatendidos o eran víctimas de gobiernos ignorantes y opresores, desde el antiguo régimen a la dictadura franquista.

D'une part, les élites économiques, politiques et culturelles en font d'emblée un instrument de cohésion en la mettant au service de leurs stratégies et de leurs systèmes de valeurs. Mais d'autre part, bien que destinée tout d'abord à un public restreint, elle touche à partir des années 1850 un nombre grandissant de lecteurs et connaît un âge d'or après 1900. Sans cesser de servir les intérêts des notables et des partis (avec un impact croissant grâce à l'évolution de ses moyens techniques et financiers), elle gagne en variété et finalement s'affirme tout à la fois comme lieu central du débat social et comme facteur premier de diffusion des normes de comportement et mentalités des élites. Au-delà des aspects structurels, c'est autour de l'incidence des rapports entre presse et élites sur les pratiques sociales et politiques que s'articule le présent ouvrage, qui constitue un nouveau jalon dans l'histoire du rôle des médias en Espagne et en Amérique latine.
