His call to read does not stand alone. Books and reading have always played a pivotal role in early and medieval Christianity, often defined as 'a religion of the book'. A second important stage in the development of the 'religion of the book' can be attested in the late Middle Ages, when religious reading was no longer the exclusive right of men and women living in solitude and concentrating on prayer and meditation. Changes in the religious landscape and the birth of new religious movements transformed the medieval town into a privileged area of religious activity. Increasing literacy opened the door to a new and wider public of lay readers. This seminal transformation in the late medieval cultural horizon saw the growing importance of the vernacular, the cultural and religious emancipation of the laity, and the increasing participation of lay people in religious life and activities. This volume presents a new, interdisciplinary approach to religious reading and reading techniques in a lay environment within late medieval textual, social, and cultural transformations.

Nederlandse lutheranen bezitten voor de viering van het avondmaal veelal oud en kostbaar gerei. Deze studie bestudeert de vormen en decoraties van dat avondmaalsgerei. De avondmaalsviering bij Nederlandse lutheranen is gestoeld op Duitse protestantse theologie. Daardoor staat dit altijd persoonlijk uitgedeelde sacrament theologisch in hoog aanzien. Tegelijkertijd waren er invloeden van de Nederlandse gereformeerde omgeving, zoals avondmaalsfrequentie en broodgebruik. De vormgeving en het decoreren van dit lutherse avondmaalsgerei weerspiegelen diverse Duitse en Nederlandse invloeden. Avondmaalsgerei wordt in deze studie als bron bestudeerd. Kerkhistorische benaderingen worden gecombineerd met inzichten die onder meer de memory-studies en studie naar Materieel Christendom opleverden. Zo blijkt dat dit gerei niet alleen in de liturgische setting van de avondmaalsviering een functie had, tevens bleek het een belangrijke identiteitsdrager te zijn van de godsdienstige minderheid van lutheranen in de Nederlanden. De multidisciplinaire benadering geeft aandacht aan onder meer liturgische gebruiken, theologische eigenheden, sociale netwerken en schenkersculturen. Vormen en tekstuele en figuratieve decoraties stonden in dienst van het profileren van de eigen identiteit. Bij veranderende maatschappelijke omstandigheden bleken sommige decoraties zelfs een dynamische betekenis te hebben, maar altijd onderstreepten zij de lutherse traditie. Door de multidisciplinaire benadering van dit materiaal komen tevens accenten naar voren die in de (kerk) geschiedenis snel over het hoofd gezien kunnen worden omdat daar doorgaans meer aandacht is voor kerkstructuren, leerstellige kwesties, predikanten of gemeentegeschiedenissen. Die accenten hangen samen met de studie naar de gelovigen zonder kerkelijke taken, die in de geschiedschrijving geen hoofdrol kregen, alsook met de studie naar hoe godsdienstige stromingen zich wilden profileren. Lutheranen profileerden zich ondermeer met een eigen vormgeving en versiering van hun avondmaalsgerei.
