Tegen de achtergrond van de roerige jaren van de Italiaanse eenwording, het Risorgimento, blikt Carlino openhartig terug op de hindernissen die een jongeman moet overwinnen om volwassen te worden en op zijn worsteling met de liefde en politieke idealen. Carlino groeit op in kasteel Fratta, in de provincie van Veneto. Gegrepen door nationalistische gevoelens trekt hij al jong naar alle Italiaanse centra van de macht: Venetië, Genua, Rome, Milaan en Napels. Ook de liefde kruist zijn pad: Pisana, met haar temperamentvolle karakter, trekt hem voortdurend aan, maar stoot hem ook af. In Belijdenissen van een Italiaan schetst Nievo een weergaloos en gepassioneerd portret van het verval van het eeuwenoude feodale regime dat in Italië zo lang de scepter zwaaide. Tussen 2017 en 2020 trok Sylvain Tesson met berggids Daniel du Lac steeds aan het eind van de winter enkele weken op ski’s over alle bergtoppen van de Alpen, van Menton in het zuidwesten naar Triëst in het noordoosten. Telkens een etappe verder: in totaal een tocht van 1600 kilometer door de sneeuw met meer dan 60.000 hoogtemeters, een tot op heden nooit geboekstaafde (want ongekende) onderneming. Ondanks de kou en vermoeidheid die dagelijks getrotseerd moesten worden, bleek de tocht een fantastische innerlijke reis langs de rand van wat nog topografisch vastgelegd mag heten te midden van een egaal en ongerept panorama. Tesson op zijn best.
