Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease with poorly understood etiology. Over the years, many genetic risk factors and some environmental risk factors were discovered to be important for RA. Genetic variants from the HLA-DRB1 locus, the shared epitope alleles, in different populations show a relatively strong and consistent effect on risk of RA. Non-HLA genetic risk factors have only a moderate effect. Gene–gene and gene–environment interactions were suspected to be important with regard to the risk of RA. Indeed, some combinations were demonstrated to be extremely influential. An important feature of RA is the development of autoantibodies, e.g., RF and ACPA, that serve as biomarkers and are used in diagnosing the disease. Interestingly, most of the genetic predisposition for RA observed so far concerns risk of developing the autoantibody positive subset of the disease, that is, the form where antibodies are present. In this chapter, we will review the current knowledge on genetics in RA and introduce multiple examples of interaction.

Raises concerns about the degree to which the rule of law and emergency powers have become fundamentally entangled, using Israel as a case study. Contemporary debates on states of emergency have focused on whether law can regulate emergency powers, if at all. These studies base their analyses on the premise that law and emergency are at odds with each other. In Between the Rule of Law and States of Emergency, Yoav Mehozay offers a fundamentally different approach, demonstrating that law and emergency are mutually reinforcing paradigms that compensate for each others shortcomings. Through a careful dissection of Israels emergency apparatus, Mehozay illustrates that the reach of Israels emergency regime goes beyond defending the state and its people against acts of terror. In fact, that apparatus has had a far greater impact on Israels governing system, and society as a whole, than has traditionally been understood. This book considers the ways in which Muslims view the way they are being viewed, not viewed, or incorrectly viewed, by the West. The book underscores a certain “will-to-visibility” whereby Muslims/ Arabs wish just to be “seen” and to be marked as fellow human beings. The author relates the failure to achieve this visibility to a state of desperation that inextricably and symmetrically ties visibility to violence. When Syrian and Palestinian refugees recently started refusing to be photographed, they clearly ushered the eventual but inevitable collapse of the image and its final futility. The photograph has been completely emptied of its last remaining possibility of signification. The book attempts to engage with questions about the ways in which images are perceived within cross cultural contexts. Why and how do people from different cultural backgrounds view the same image in opposing ways; why do cartoon, photographs, and videos become both the cause and target of bloody political violence – as witnessed recently by the deadly attacks against Charlie Hebdo in France and in the swift military response by the US, Jordan, France, and others to videotaped violence by ISIS.

The intertextuality research of antique texts and their reception in Medieval and modern times is the subject of this volume: (1) What is a text and what is an intertext? This concerns the various different forms of text and how they present themselves in architecture, iconography, lexicography, the study of lists, etc. (2) Forms of intertextuality – on the relationship between writtenness and oralness, how oral texts are objectified during textualisation and become fixed acts of speech (K. Ehlich), how especially antique texts were shaped by the continual interconnectedness of oral and written traditions. (3) What is understood in ancient Oriental and antique literature by "tradition" and "transmission"? To this end, the research includes languages, historical reality and antique thought structures, making clear that the transferral of tradition occurs not only within a close cultural circle, but in the exchange with neighbouring cultures over large distances and geographic boundaries. (4) On the relationship between intertextuality and canon. A number of contributions study this aspect of ongoing historical debate as it often found for culturally definitive and canonised texts – a necessary part of the their rejuvination process.
