Pour rendre compte des débats et des prises de position -implicites ou non - relatifs au développement de l'urbanisation de Beyrouth depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle, on a plus fortement mobilisé la notion de limite et celle d'étendue ; celles de territoire et d'hinterland ont aussi été mises à contribution. A travers les treize articles réunis dans ce livre, les auteurs tentent de mieux comprendre comment Beyrouth, simple port de cabotage comptant seulement quelques milliers d'habitants au milieu du XIXe siècle, en regroupe actuellement plus d'un million et s'étend sur plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres carrés. Il s'agit donc d'un travail en histoire, mais pas seulement. Après dix-sept ans d'une guerre qui l'a particulièrement touchée, la capitale libanaise est en cours de reconstruction. Au-delà de l'espace urbain, cette reconstruction s'inscrit dans des enjeux qui ne peuvent être saisis que dans une analyse des territoires de Beyrouth et du Liban qui s'étendent depuis les proches banlieues jusqu'aux confins de la plaine syrienne. Si les travaux des historiens constituent la première partie de la publication, ce sont des géographes, des anthropologues, des architectes et des urbanistes qui ont alimenté les autres. Au-delà de l'accroissement du volume des connaissances, le fait que les auteurs soient pour la plupart de jeunes chercheurs - moins marqués que leurs aînés par les difficultés d'exercice de la recherche durant la guerre - contribue aussi, à sa manière, au renouvellement des paradigmes de la recherche urbaine au Liban.
