What is the proper place of the Bible in Black Churches? Baker-Fletcher explores the Bible as a uniquely authoritative text within the context of Black church worship and service to the world. He analyzes the Bible’s central role in three forms of witness: translation, proclamation, and empowerment. Trusting that the Bible is authentically “God’s Word” that uses human language, Baker-Fletcher affirms the uniqueness of the Bible in the church’s multiple tasks of preaching, teaching, and prophetic ministries. Finally, finding proverbial wisdom in rap music, the book concludes with a case study of the book of Romans.

Reading While Black written by Esau McCaulley and has been published by InterVarsity Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-01 with Religion categories.

Growing up in the American South, Esau McCaulley knew firsthand the ongoing struggle between despair and hope that marks the lives of some in the African American context. A key element in the fight for hope, he discovered, has long been the practice of Bible reading and interpretation that comes out of traditional Black churches. This ecclesial tradition is often disregarded or viewed with suspicion by much of the wider church and academy, but it has something vital to say. Reading While Black is a personal and scholarly testament to the power and hope of Black biblical interpretation. At a time in which some within the African American community are questioning the place of the Christian faith in the struggle for justice, New Testament scholar McCaulley argues that reading Scripture from the perspective of Black church tradition is invaluable for connecting with a rich faith history and addressing the urgent issues of our times. He advocates for a model of interpretation that involves an ongoing conversation between the collective Black experience and the Bible, in which the particular questions coming out of Black communities are given pride of place and the Bible is given space to respond by affirming, challenging, and, at times, reshaping Black concerns. McCaulley demonstrates this model with studies on how Scripture speaks to topics often overlooked by white interpreters, such as ethnicity, political protest, policing, and slavery. Ultimately McCaulley calls the church to a dynamic theological engagement with Scripture, in which Christians of diverse backgrounds dialogue with their own social location as well as the cultures of others. Reading While Black moves the conversation forward.

Can I Get A Witness written by Brian K. Blount and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-01 with Religion categories.

In this accessible and provocative study, Brian Blount reads the book of Revelation through the lens of African American culture, drawing correspondences between Revelation's context and the long-standing suffering of African Americans. Applying the African American social, political, and religious experience as an interpretive cipher for the book's complicated imagery, he contends that Revelation is essentially a story of suffering and struggle amid oppressive assimilation. He examines the language of "martyr" and the image of the lamb, and shows that the thread of resistance to oppressive power that runs through John's hymns resonates with a parallel theme in the music of African America.

For decades the black church and black theology have held each other at arm's length. Black theology has emphasized the role of Christian faith in addressing racism and other forms of oppression, arguing that Jesus urged his disciples to seek the freedom of all peoples. Meanwhile, the black church, even when focused on social concerns, has often emphasized personal piety rather than social protest. With the rising influence of conservative evangelicalism, biblical fundamentalism, and the prosperity gospel, the divide has become even more pronounced. In The Divided Mind of the Black Church, Raphael G. Warnock, senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual home of the Reverend Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr., traces the historical significance of the rise and development of black theology as an important conversation partner for the black church. In this volume of The New Church's Teaching Series, Harold T. Beginning with the Bible's understandings of social justice, Lewis summarizes the Anglican witness of theologians like F. D. Maurice and William Temple and goes on to discuss the Episcopal Church in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Later chapters discuss the challenges of a new social order that face the church today raised by liberation theology, third-world debt and economic justice, and questions of race, gender, and human sexuality. As with each book in The New Church's Teaching Series, recommended resources for further reading and questions for discussion are included.

After signal victories of the civil rights movement in the sixties, recent events have shown that the divide between black and white Americans remains alarmingly wide. And as African- and Euro-Americans perhaps increasingly find themselves at odds politically and culturally, Sunday-morning worship dismayingly remains the most segregated hour of the week.Yet Christians of both races affirm that the gospel calls them together, that they at least should be one people, of one Lord, one faith, one baptism. In that spirit, the incisive and challenging essays in this book consider what rigorous theological work can contribute to the noble and ongoing quest for racial reconciliation. Some of the church's most exciting black and white thinkers are gathered here by editor Dennis Okholm to address issues of theological method, hermeneutics, soteriology, ecclesiology and social ethics--always with an eye to closing the gaping wound of racism and serving God's kingdom across color lines.
