“CIVILIAN WARRIORS, CIVILIAN HEALERS” is an honest account of the destruction of the world's busiest emergency response system. New York City's 911 System takes more than one million calls a year, making in the most active EMS in the world, and Jim Schrang worked in it more than twenty years: on the streets as a paramedic, under the politics of the Chiefs, and as a sometimes whistleblower whose predictions of disaster rubbed the brass wrong, even when he turned out to be right. This is his unique account of the disastrous changes that have taken place in NY EMS since FDNY took over. Chronicled here are the scandals we never hear about, from the turf battles that keep units underfunded to the sexual harassment suits filed by female employees, from the worker's comp scams to the shameful treatment of EMS workers, one of whom dies. Another lingers near death while still waiting for FDNY to acknowledge her claim for an illness caught on the job; even the doctors who first treated her denies any acknowledge of the case, her files disappear in a "fire" where nothing else seems to be touched, and she is left with no proof that her condition ever existed except the doctor's name on a medication bottle. It is a story at times absurd and sometimes outrageous, but its consequences are deadly. Starting from scenes of life on the streets, Schrang takes us through the long series of mis-steps EMS was sent through by the Giuliani administration, culminating in the total unpreparedness for 9/11 that inhibited NY emergency services in the words of someone who was there. It will make you wonder just who you're trusting with your family safety.

Civilian Warriors written by Erik Prince and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-18 with History categories.

No company in our time has been as mysterious or as controversial as Blackwater. Founded by former Navy SEAL Erik Prince in 1997, it recruited special forces veterans and others with the skills and courage to take on the riskiest security jobs in the world. As its reputation grew, government demand for its services escalated, and Blackwater's men eventually completed nearly one hundred thousand missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both the Bush and Obama administrations found the company indispensible. It sounds like a classic startup success story, except for one problem: Blackwater has been demonized around the world. From uninformed news coverage to grossly distorted fictional portrayals, Blackwater employees have been smeared as mercenaries, profiteers, jackbooted thugs, and worse. Because of the secrecy requirements of Blackwater's contracts with the Pentagon, the State Department, and the CIA, Prince was unable to speak out when his company's opponents spread false information. But now he's able to tell the full and often shocking story of Blackwater's rise and fall. In Civilian Warriors, Prince pulls no punches and spares no details. He explains his original goal of building an elite center for military and law enforcement training. He recounts how the company shifted gears after 9/11. He honors our troops while challenging the Pentagon's top leadership. And he reveals why highly efficient private military contractors have been essential to running our armed forces, since long before Blackwater came along. Above all, Prince debunks myths about Blackwater that spread while he was forced to remain silent-myths that tarnished the memory of men who gave their lives for their country but never got the recognition they deserved. He reveals new information about some of the biggest controversies of the War on Terror, including: • The true story of the Nisour Square massacre in Baghdad. • The actual details of Blackwater's so-called impunity in Iraq. • The events leading up to the televised deaths of Blackwater contractors in Fallujah. Prince doesn't pretend to be perfect, and he doesn't hide the sometimes painful details of his private life. But he has done a great public service by setting the record straight. His book reads like a thriller but is too improbable to be fiction.

It is estimated that well over 250,000 military veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering today from PTSD, and even more from post-traumatic stress or PTS. Clinical interventions alone do not adequately address all the issues associated with PTSD. There is also a profound spiritual dimension to trauma, and it is frequently manifested in post-trauma symptoms such as guilt, grief, and shame; and in various forms of loss including, loss of meaning, loss of faith, and loss of peace. Pastors, chaplains, and Christian counselors have a legitimate, healing role alongside clinicians in addressing the spiritual aspects of trauma through spiritual interventions that are based on Scripture and leverage new ways of viewing trauma and assumptions about its meaning. Beyond Trauma: Hope & Healing for Warriors equips pastors, chaplains and other pastoral caregivers with the knowledge and resources to not only understand the spiritual effects of trauma, but to make appropriate interventions that will lead veterans in their churches and communities to healing and growth.

Decades after Charles Figley’s landmark Trauma and Its Wake was published, our understanding of trauma has grown and deepened, but we still face considerable challenges when treating trauma survivors. This is especially the case for professionals who work with veterans and active-duty military personnel. War Trauma and Its Wake, then, is a vital book. The editors—one a Vietnam veteran who wrote the overview chapter on treatment for Trauma and Its Wake, the other an Army Reserve psychologist with four deployments—have produced a book that addresses both the specific needs of particular warrior communities as well as wider issues such as battlemind, guilt, suicide, and much, much more. The editors’ and contributors’ deep understanding of the issues that warriors face makes War Trauma and Its Wake a crucial book for understanding the military experience, and the lessons contained in its pages are essential for anyone committed to healing war trauma.

Poetry And Pedagogy Across The Lifespan written by Sandra Lee Kleppe and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-08 with Education categories.

This book explores poetry and pedagogy in practice across the lifespan. Poetry is directly linked to improved literacy, creativity, personal development, emotional intelligence, complex analytical thinking and social interaction: all skills that are crucial in contemporary educational systems. However, a narrow focus on STEM subjects at the expense of the humanities has led educators to deprioritize poetry and to overlook its interdisciplinary, multi-modal potential. The editors and contributors argue that poetry is not a luxury, but a way to stimulate linguistic experiences that are formally rich and cognitively challenging. To learn through poetry is not just to access information differently, but also to forge new and different connections that can serve as reflective tools for lifelong learning. This interdisciplinary book will be of value to teachers and students of poetry, as well as scholars interested in literacy across the disciplines.
