A study was made of single-layer and two layer composite coatings of polyurethane. It was found that the rain erosion resistance of both these coating types is strongly reduced by outdoor weathering in Florida for ten weeks. A multilayer composite coating has rain-erosion resistance equal or superior to that of a two-layer composite coating.

High-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. This report documents an investigation of acid-resistant coating systems that can be applied to composite storage cylinders used on natural gas vehicles. Two recent tank failures were likely caused by stress corrosion cracking of the composite overwrap. Cracking was probably induced by acidic compounds (battery acid) in direct contact with the cylinder's fiber reinforced plastic overwrap. A literature search, discussions with cylinder manufacturers, and laboratory materials studies were performed to identify potential coatings. This investigation also identified relevant test procedures for environmental and materials evaluations. SEM measurements identified microcracks induced by stress corrosion. Laboratory testing included acid immersion tests of coated and uncoated specimens on E-glass/epoxy and E-glass/polyester substrates, as well as physical and mechanical characterization of exposed and control samples. Full scale cylinders, both coated and uncoated were also tested by exposing a segment of each cylinder to a concentrated acidic solution. Both preliminary laboratory and full scale results indicated that the preferred coating materials (in order of resistance) were neoprene rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber, polyurethane coatings, and epoxy and polyester coatings, based on resistance to degradation of the composite materials and cylinders.

While sapphire-fiber-reinforced nickel aluminide (Al2O3/NiAl) composites are an attractive candidate for high-temperature structures, the significant difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the NiAl matrix and the sapphire fiber creates substantial residual stresses in the composite. This study seeks to produce two fiber-coating systems with the potential to reduce the residual stresses in the sapphire/NiAl composite system. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was used to produce both the compensating and compliant-fiber coatings for use in sapphire/NiAl composites. A special reactor was designed and built to produce the FGM and to handle the toxic nickel precursors. Permanent primer coating systems and strippable coating systems were investigated for use on both graphite/epoxy composite and aluminum surfaces. While the so-called permanent primer systems did not exhibit sufficient chemical resistance to be useful, two strippable systems were identified. One coating system, based on a nitrocellulose lacquer release coat, was suitable for graphite/epoxy surfaces but not aluminum. A compatible chemical remover was developed for this system using methylene chloride as the solvent base. The second strippable system, based on a polysulfide release coat, can be used on both surfaces and requires a polysulfide remover. Two methods were developed to determine compatibility of chemical removers with graphite/epoxy composites.
