“A jewel to those interested in ore mining, mineral collecting and mineralogy, or the anthropology of value.” —American Ethnologist Anthropologist Elizabeth Emma Ferry traces the movement of minerals as they circulate from Mexican mines to markets, museums, and private collections on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. She describes how and why these byproducts of ore mining come to be valued by people in various walks of life as scientific specimens, religious offerings, works of art, and luxury collectibles. The story of mineral exploration and trade defines a variegated transnational space, shedding new light on the complex relationship between these two countries—and on the process of making value itself. “A novel contribution to the anthropology of natural resources.” —Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology “Highly recommended.” —Choice

Folk Treasures Of Mexico written by Marion Oettinger, Jr. and has been published by Arte Publico Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-01 with ART categories.

In his foreword, former New York governor and vice president of the United States Nelson A. Rockefeller remembers his first trip to Mexico in 1933 and his subsequent, life-long fascination with the Mexican people and their popular art. Rockefeller's collection of more than 3,000 pieces of Mexican folk art is widely considered to be the most exceptional in the U.S., and Folk Treasures of Mexico celebrates these icons, created from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, with more than 150 photos of the pieces, many of which are quite rare. This updated edition of the long out-of-print book focusing on this stunning collection of Mexican folk art contains a new foreword by Rockefeller's daughter, Ann Rockefeller Roberts, and a new prologue by Marion Oettinger, Jr., the director of the San Antonio Museum of Art, who wrote the principal text about the collection. Oettinger describes the objects according to function: utilitarian, ceremonial, decorative, or for play. Among the many noteworthy objects are a wooden-carved centurion helmet mask from the eighteenth century depicting a Roman guard, which is one of the few remaining masks of this type in existence, and a nineteenth century ceramic pitcher from Oaxaca that combines many stylistic techniques. Other objects include a variety of children's toys, clothing, and items for eating and drinking. First published in 1990, the book also contains the original preface by Rockefeller's daughter, who was instrumental in finding permanent homes for her father's collection, which can now be found in the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Mexican Museum in San Francisco. Including a glossary, bibliography, and chronology, Folk Treasures of Mexico is a must-read for anyone interested in Latin American art, culture, and history.

Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of Objects Illustrating the Folklore of Mexico The Collection of Objects described in the following pages is a gift by Professor Starr to the Folk-Lore Society. It is due to him, as well as of interest to the Members of the Society, to state shortly how it was this gift came to be made, and upon what conditions. Being at Chicago in the latter days of August, 1897, I took the opportunity of calling on Professor Starr, with whom I had already had some correspondence on anthropological matters, and whose personal acquaintance I was anxious to make. He received me with great kindness; and in the course of the interview I learned that he was making a special study of the anthropology of Mexico; and he showed me many interesting things which he had brought back from his travels in that country. I was especially attracted by a series of pottery figures (Tastoanes) representing the characters in a passion play performed in one of the country districts of Mexico, and a series of masks, also in pottery, worn by the actors. As I listened there came upon me the wish to secure a set of the figures for the Folk-Lore Society; and I inquired whether it would not be possible to do so. Professor Starr readily and kindly undertook to procure a set for me. After my return home, however, I received a letter from him, intimating that he had changed his mind, and offering instead to make at his own expense, and present to the Society, a Collection of Objects illustrating the Folklore of Mexico, subject to three conditions: - 1. That the Collection should be kept as a Mexican Collection, with the donor's name attached. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
