In this 1989 book Rorty argues that thinkers such as Nietzsche, Freud, and Wittgenstein have enabled societies to see themselves as historical contingencies, rather than as expressions of underlying, ahistorical human nature or as realizations of suprahistorical goals. This ironic perspective on the human condition is valuable on a private level, although it cannot advance the social or political goals of liberalism. In fact Rorty believes that it is literature not philosophy that can do this, by promoting a genuine sense of human solidarity. A truly liberal culture, acutely aware of its own historical contingency, would fuse the private, individual freedom of the ironic, philosophical perspective with the public project of human solidarity as it is engendered through the insights and sensibilities of great writers. The book has a characteristically wide range of reference from philosophy through social theory to literary criticism. Até 1994, quando vigia o regime segregacionista de apartheid na África do Sul, a população negra não tinha acesso aos direitos básicos no país. Assim, tampouco eram vistos como clientes pelas grandes empresas. Com a eleição de Nelson Mandela e o fim do apartheid, acentuou-se o processo de financeirização do país e só então os negros passaram a serem tratados como potenciais clientes para o capital em geral, e para as seguradoras, especificamente. Nos dias atuais, em algumas periferias (townships) sul- africanas, como Indawo Yoxolo e Tembani, na Cidade do Cabo, ao menos 75% da população afirmam possuir apólice de seguro, e 63% uma apólice funerária. É desse cenário de mudança tão brusca que o antropólogo Erik Bähre parte neste instigante livro. Escapando de respostas fáceis, como responsabilizar exclusivamente o neoliberalismo ou o homo economicus, já que o Estado sul-africano é, segundo sua abordagem, desenvolvimentista, o autor opta pela noção de financeirização, em sua dimensão irônica, a partir do filósofo estadunidense Richard Rorty (1989). A ideia central é que no processo da financeirização sul-africana opera uma noção de solidariedade, no que ela contém de paradoxal. Nas palavras do autor: "A solidariedade dá ensejo a formas particulares de cuidado e ao mesmo tempo introduz crueldades específicas. Neste livro sugiro um modo de analisar o cuidado e a crueldade como dois lados da mesma moeda e revelar como tais dinâmicas dependem das circunstâncias históricas, sociais, políticas, econômicas e culturais específicas". Conhecer as mudanças sociais, ontológicas e intersubjetivas desse processo, numa prosa elegante e bem fundamentada, é o convite que a obra de Bähre nos faz.

Om de publieke opinie tegen slavenhandel en slavernij te keren, namen voormalige slaven soms zelf het woord. In het Engelse taalgebied verschenen ervan af de late achttiende eeuw tientallen autobiografieën van ex-slaven. Een deel van deze teksten werd, in vertaling, ook in Nederland uitgegeven, zelfs tot ver na de afschaffing van de slavernij. Marijke Huisman volgt de sporen van een aantal slaven autobiografieën door Groot-Brittannië, de Verenigde Staten en Nederland. Zij onderzoekt de rol die deze getuigenissen speelden in de productie van kennis over slavernij en het slavernijverleden. Het resultaat is een boeiende interpretatie geschiedenis die begint in 1789 bij de anti-slavernijbeweging en via onder meer de Aprilbeweging, de Harlem Renaissance, Black Power, de tweede feministische golf en de 'canon wars' voert naar actuele debatten over de omgang met het koloniale slavernijverleden ende 'slavernij' van moslimvrouwen.
