The highly-charged debate over Morocco’s diasporic minorities in Europe has led to a growing interest in the literary production of these ‘new’ Europeans. This comparative study is the first to discuss together a body of texts, including contemporary Judeo-Moroccan literature, written in French, Spanish, Catalan and Dutch, which have never been studied as a group. Faced with such a variegated field of literary production, the aim of this book is not to tie individual works of literature to their ‘national’ place of origin, but to re-conceptualize the idea of a ‘Moroccan’ literature with regard to the transnational and multilingual experiences from which it arises. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical insights, from Fatima Mernissi’s concept of female subalternity to Abdelmalek Sayad’s principle of the immigrants’ ‘absent’ history, this book allows for the re-evaluation of the relationship between migration and postcolonial literary studies. A careful analysis of the literary techniques used in the texts under scrutiny here highlights their poetic qualities, without bypassing their political relevance with regard to the intercultural relations between Morocco and Europe as they are presently unfolding across the Mediterranean, and beyond.

This book explores how stereotypes of “oppressed Muslim women” feed into the self-representations of women with a Muslim background. The focus is on women active in, and speaking on behalf of, a wide variety of minority self-organisations in the Netherlands and Norway between 1975 and 2010. The author reveals how these women have internalised and appropriated particular stereotypes, and also developed counter-stereotypes about majority Dutch or Norwegian women. She demonstrates, above all, how they have tried time and again to change popular perceptions by providing alternative images of themselves and of Islam, paying particular attention to their attempts to gain access to media debates. Her central argument is that their efforts to undermine stereotypes can be understood as an assertion of belonging in Dutch and Norwegian society and, in the case of women committed to Islam, as a demand for their religion to be accepted. This innovative work provides a “history from below” that makes a valuable contribution to scholarly debates about citizenship as a practice of inclusion and exclusion. Providing new insights into the dynamics between stereotyping and self-representation, it will appeal to scholars of gender, religion, media, and cultural diversity.

Op 7 mei 2011 publiceerde het 'NRC Handelsblad' een kritisch essay van Anil Ramdas over het Nederlandse minderhedenbeleid. Hij verweet de overheid een te grote opdringerigheid in de omgang met de eigen culturen van migranten. Rond de eeuwwisseling, met name na '9/11' en de moord op Theo van Gogh in 2004, was er sprake van een beweging naar het andere uiterste: 'de overheid voelt zich nu geroepen om niet de eigen culturen te bevorderen, maar om de eigen culturen te bestrijden!' In dit boek, waarin de banden van Marokkaanse migranten centraal staan, beschrijft Nadia Bouras de veranderde houding van de Nederlandse overheid en de verschuivingen aan Marokkaanse zijde. Haar analyse van het Marokkaanse emigratiebeleid en levensverhalen van Marokkanen maakt duidelijke welke factoren de aard en de omvang van de banden met Marokko tussen 1960 en 2010 hebben bepaald.

Zonder uitzondering waren zij van hun familie de eerste generatie studerenden en meestal waren zij ook de enigen uit hun gezin. Mick Matthys heeft uitgebreid met hen gepraat over hun ervaringen en de manier waarop zij de betekenis van hun afkomst hebben ingezet om te slagen in leven en loopbaan. Pijnlijk was het afscheid van het arbeidersmilieu, men bleef loyaal en dankbaar naar de ouders, maar overheersend blijven toch vervreemding, de onmogelijkheid van communicatie en de afwijzing. De integratie in het nieuwe milieu is een dubbelzinnige ervaring. Op het werk gaat het niet alleen om professionele competenties, maar om netwerken en het beheersen van de juiste culturele codes. Aan het woord komen chirurgen, hoogleraren, en politici, maar ook mensen die de beloften van een universitair diploma niet waar konden maken. Ieder van hen beschikt echter over een sterk professioneel ethos, een enorme werkkracht en doorzettingsvermogen. Zoals de betekenissen van het arbeidersmilieu de uitgesproken professionele drive inspireren, liggen zij ook aan de basis van het ongemak in omgang met autoriteit en de complexe verhouding met leidinggevenden.
